Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Kids learn to bend, twist and achieve spiritual balance with new titles that focus on yoga. Renowned yoga instructor Baron Baptiste unfolds My Daddy Is a Pretzel: Yoga for Parents and Kids, illus. by Sophie Fatus. Sitting in a circle, children reveal their parents' jobs, all of which are then related to a yoga pose: "Anna says her step-dad's a pilot. Sometimes my daddy's an airplane." Scenes of parent and child on the job alternate with spreads that give step-by-step instructions for the correlating poses (nine in all). Fatus's bright watercolors teem with relevant details and her lithe children make the poses look achievable. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Opening with circle time in an early childhood classroom, we find that while many children have parents who are gardeners, veterinarians, marine biologists, one child's dad is sometimes—wait! Did she really say he was a tree? Yes, and a dog and a triangle and a bridge too. Each revelation of a new yoga asana (pose) that Dad can do is followed by simple, straightforward instructions for attaining that pose. Most are well-known hatha yoga poses. The "airplane" appears to be a modified version of a more traditional asana, possibly a "toppling tree." The humor in this book lies in the stretches of imagination we must make between, say, Emmie's daddy being a farmer, and "Sometimes, my daddy's a plow." The turn of the page rewards such imagining with a spread showing the asana (verso), and the steps to get a reader there (recto). A loving humor likewise infuses the bright illustrations in a scene in which the narrator declares that her mommy's a baker, thereby earning the book its inviting title. The author's introduction seems wordy and gets in the way. A final spread with all the asanas in the book, plus tips for young yogis, constitute useful and interesting back matter. 2005, Barefoot Books, Ages 4 to 8.

My kids and I LOVE this.

We hadn't done yoga before and we just love it (kids age 3 and 6). It's simple and easy and they just laugh and laugh as they do the positions. My daughter took it with her to her first grade class and the entire class loved it and want to do it again.
