Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Several anthologies present wisdom for all. Two collections, taken together, offer a balanced view: You Never Did Learn to Knock: 14 Stories About Girls and Their Mothers, edited by Bel Mooney; and My Dad's a Punk: 12 Stories About Boys and Their Fathers, edited by Tony Bradman. Mates, Dates author Cathy Hopkins offers the bittersweet title story of the first collection: her 12-year-old heroine continues to talk with her Mum, who passed away three weeks before. Other contributors include Adele Geras and Betty Hicks. Ron Koertge's "Twenty Crows," in the second book, follows a teen narrator whose father makes seemingly empty promises, but comes through unexpectedly to give the boy hope. Tim Wynne-Jones and Terence Blacker number among the other contributors. Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
VOYA
Bradman gathers the writings of an eclectic mix of American, Canadian, British, and Australian authors for this collection. Daniel Ehrenhaft's Handheld is told entirely in e-mail messages. Simon Cheshire's Later is a futuristic story with a tragic twist, while Alan Gibbon's World War II story, Street Corner Dad, ends on a surprisingly happy note. The friends in Ron Koertge's Twenty Crows have all kinds of fathers: pushy, gay, dead, and inattentive. The stories cover a range of genres and issues, but on the whole portray positive father-son relationships, where even the dysfunctional dads come through in the end. As in most story collections, the quality of the writing is uneven, but the best stories will stay with the reader for a while. Although the jacket blurb promises "page-turning action," most stories hinge on character development rather than plot. Some of the stories feature an emotional focus on relationships that most teenage boys will not admit to appreciating. Teens might be drawn in by the catchy title and appealing cover art. No author information is included, even though some of the authors have written acclaimed books for teens. Overall the collection is a good choice for libraries and father-son book clubs. VOYA CODES: 4Q 3P M J (Better than most, marred only by occasional lapses; Will appeal with pushing; Middle School, defined as grades 6 to 8; Junior High, defined as grades 7 to 9). 2006, Kingfisher/Houghton Mifflin, 272p., Trade pb. Ages 11 to 15.

Gr 6 Up-Writers from the United States, Great Britain, and Australia are represented in this collection; interestingly, all have similar stories to tell. The title story is written from the point of view of an adolescent whose divorced dad plays with a band, "Bucket of Snot," and is seldom there for his son. The selections cover myriad complex paternal dynamics including a devoted dad, a workaholic, a homosexual, a deceased father, and one from the future. The stories are funny, truthful, poignant, and bittersweet. Each protagonist has specific needs but the common thread is that each boy wants to spend more time with his father. This book gives teens a realistic picture of the variety of father/son relationships.-Sharon Morrison, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Durant, OK Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
