Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich
The cover of this appealing book displays a red velvet curtain being pulled open to reveal the main character, a little girl who is about to perform in a dance recital. Because the story is told in the first person, we never learn her name. She and her sister are both dancers and they go off together to the theater, each with her own costume and make-up bag. We see her getting her hair done by way of a turning wheel as she goes from an ordinary little girl to a princess with a crown. She takes us backstage where everyone is practicing their steps and watching the clock as show time gets closer. Some are practicing their kicks, others practice ballet positions. "Everyone waits and waits. . ." Finally it is her sister's turn. She does a jazz dance. Tommy does a tap dance. "Shhh. We line up behind the curtain." Then, in a peep-show page that opens into a deep V, we see her twirling around and around in a fairy ballet surrounded by other dancers with curtains left, right, and above. On the last page, with a pull of a tab, she takes her bow! This is a charming book for any young girl who dances, or for those who think they might want to dance. Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich
