Children's Literature
Maggie, who wishes she had a boyfriend like her friend Liz has, goes out with Dennis and, despite a rocky start, they begin a relationship. Meanwhile, Liz and her boyfriend Sean have an emotional, on-again, off-again relationship, but truly care for one another. On prom night, a chain of events occurs that changes these four friends lives forever. An assault on Liz brings Sean to her rescue and they end up having sex. When Liz discovers she is pregnant, they initially discuss getting married, but Sean's father talks him out of that plan. Maggie goes with Liz to get an abortion, but panics when Liz starts bleeding in the car. Maggie gets Liz's parents, and everyone in town ends up finding out about the pregnancy. By the time graduation roles around, the dynamic between these people is permanently altered. While Zindel's work is no longer quite as controversial as when it was first published, many of the issues are still relevant to today's teenagers. The book is told mostly through narratives, but notes and school papers written by the main characters add texture. Zindel's characters and situations remain as realistic today as they were more than thirty years ago. 2005 (orig. 1969), Harper Trophy, Ages 12 up.

My Darling, My Hamburger, by Paul Zindel is a book about four teenagers named Liz, Maggie, Sean, and Dennis. Sean and Liz are the popular ones, but their parents misunderstand them. Maggie and Dennis are shy and not the best looking, but they have loving parents that care about them. Liz and Sean are in love. Sean and Dennis are best friends. Maggie and Liz are also best friends. Sean and Liz decide to set Maggie and Dennis on a date. Dennis and Maggie's relationship goes well, but their best friends' mistake ruins their relationship. Liz ends up pregnant, and at first, Sean is willing to be there and marry her. Sean then decides he is too young to become a father and has his whole life ahead of him, so he gives Liz money to get an abortion. Liz has no one to turn to and she cannot tell her parents about her pregnancy. Liz decides to get an abortion and asks Maggie to come along. After the abortion, everything seemed normal, until Liz started to bleed. Maggie panicked and told Liz's parents everything. Maggie might have saved Liz's life but they never spoke again. This book teaches us that some of the choices we make in life stay with us forever.

Out of all books the books I read when I was younger (I'm now in my 20's) this is about the only one I can remember. It moved me greatly and I would recommend it to any teenager.

I just started reading this book in school. Although im just up to the 3rd chapter, I have gotten real attached to this story. It's an excellent book that can sure describe what many of us had faced in life and/or might have to face one day.

Nothing is worse than re-reading a book from your youth that you loved and seeing it, now, as trite. I just re-read 'My Darling, My Hamburger' and was just as moved and more impressed with the writing than when I read it a couple of decades ago. Memory serves correctly: I can't wait to re-read 'The Pigman'.

I read this book in seventh grade and truly enjoyed it. When you're that age a book like this really brings up a lot of emotions that are being dealt with then and in the years ahead. It's a great book, would love to read it again.

I must confess, i am not very fond of reading. as the end of the year of school approaches I can't wait until summer. well most of it. During 8th grade we had to read Paul Zindel's novel The Pigman. I failed every test because I didn't read it. Anyway back to the point: My Darling, My Hamburger. I chose this book out of the three summer reading books for entering 9th grade. I was going to just use online reviews for my report, but I read it one night. I could not put it down. Paul Zindel is a wonderful author. The book was full of suspense and i would reccomend it to anyone who isn't exactly fond of reading. I think I'll go read the pigman because this book was so good.

I am a 14 year old girl who fell in love with Zindel's writing a few years ago when I read the book RATS. My Darling My Hamburger has a wonderful story line and can give you mixed emotions. I wish I could give the book 100 stars. If you have never read this book I highly recomend it.

When I first heard of the title of the book I thought this book was going to be wierd but it turned out to be really great!Every teen should read this because they would see that life isn't always picture perfect! The characters were real and I loved every second of reading this.

Its a great book. I was assigned it for english class and usually I don't like the books, but this was a great book. The characters are always in some mess, but they are real life situations that could actually happen

I really enjoyed this book. I don't really like to read that much except for some books that you can't put down. And this is DEFINATELY one of them! It shows the typical life of a teenager. It shows how the pressures and thoughts of teenager affects what they think of themselves, and what others think. It is a really good book. I enjoyed it VERY much and i highly recommend it for those of you who don't like to read boring books or don't like to read at all. It is one of my favorite books!!!

I was assigned this book for an English class, which usually means I will hate the book and be bored to tears but...it turned out to be very good. The book made you think about real-life situations and that you have to make some very tough decisions in life. I couldn't put this book down, I had to see what the characters would get into next, but I didn't care for the ending. The story was flowing and going good and then it just all of a sudden stopped. The book was good though, I would recommend it

Unfortunately, I was assigned this book for a school assignment. As soon as I finished the first chapter, I was already laughing at the pointless, ridiculous plot, characters, and theme. This book is really a waste of time for anyone. It is really stupid and truly boring, but my friends and I did get a good laugh out of the silliness of it.

This is a very good book to read. I picked it up and could not put it down untill I finished it. The characters seemed so extremely real. It made me think about how it applied to every day situations. I plan to read it again I enjoyed it so much, Paul Zendel wrote a good one.
