Children's Literature - Ginjer L. ClarkeAs part of the "We Both Read" series, this book provides storyline text on the left-hand side of each spread for the adult to read and simple, everyday object words on the right-hand side for the child to read. The story chronicles a child's day at home and school and the common items encompassed in that world. The singsong rhymes don't seem necessary, but the cadence is generally unforced, and the child reader will enjoy finishing the rhymes. Johnson's illustrations are winning, with lots of expression in the children's faces and attempts at multiracial representations. The strong inked outlines create a cartoonlike look, which is enhanced by the flashcard-type images of some objects. The predictable day and intact nuclear family (which sometimes evokes the Dick and Jane books) may not be familiar to some children, but their routines will probably be similar enough to be comforting.
