Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
As the youngest member in the long and unfortunate Bleak bloodline, Finney has few pressures that weigh more heavily upon him than his impending, and most likely, cataclysmic death. The Bleak family is notorious for its members meeting their demise: Margaret Bleak, a magician's assistant was literally sawed in half, and Archibald Bleak, a zookeeper, was smothered by manure. Downtrodden and consumed by his fear of death, Finney attracts nothing but trouble at his high school and pines for his lost love, Jenny. Finney and Jenny met many months ago at a traveling carnival where they shared time on the Ferris wheel, were bored by a puny roller coaster and fell in love on the Bucket of Blood. How will Finney find his lost love and what will he do when he realizes that, like most of his extended family, Jenny is quite dearly departed? This is the first series created by Wight, who is best known for his work on the television show The O.C. Wight has an uncanny knack for capturing the ferocity of teenage emotions in both ink and words. His artwork is poppy (assuredly the most enjoyable aspect of this book) and the fast-paced story will appeal to teenage readers. (Feb.) Copyright 2007 Reed Business Information.
KLIATT - George Galuschak
Finney Bleak can't catch a break. He's considered a freak at his high school, where his classmates are vampires, werewolves, warlocks, mummies and ghouls. His bloodline is rife with instances of family members dying in creative ways—impaled by a cutlass; devoured by a great white shark; suffocated in two tons of elephant manure; vanished while trying to cross the Atlantic Ocean on a lawn chair tied to 837 balloons. Finney thinks his luck is changing when he meets Jenny Wraith at a fair. She's blonde and cute and they do all the things young couples do—go on the rides, exchange gross stories, hold hands, even kiss. They make plans to meet the next day, but Jenny never shows. Finney is so heartbroken he doesn't even care when The Deadbeats—a gang of teen monsters—decide to use him as a punching bag. Enter a dark-robed figure with a scythe, who seems strangely familiar… My Dead Girlfriend is a romance-comedy-horror manga that teens of all ages will enjoy. The b/w art is highly original—blocky and cartoony and weirdly gothic. Finney is a likable hero, even though he isn't particularly strong or smart or brave. He's just a normal teenager who wears skull jammies to bed and has a gargoyle-dog named Mookie for a pet. I particularly liked Finney's reaction when The Deadbeats decide to pulverize him; he covers his eyes and quivers with fear as his dead girlfriend (Jenny, the aforementioned dark-robed figure) makes mincemeat of them. My Dead Girlfriend contains light vulgarity (‘bastard'), and is highly recommended for graphic novel collections that contain manga; especially recommended for teens who like their horror with a light touch.

    Pretty amazing...

Pretty awesome little graphic novel. While it has definite appeal for manga fans, it's really not very manga in its approach, other than the size and format. It's definitely a better example of well done, indie, American comics. Also, it hasn't been close to three years since the first one came out. Try a little over one year.

    Such a Pity

This was one of the first mangas I purchased when I got into the Manga Scene, but it has been at least 3 years since its release and no sequel has appeared, either on the shelves or internet. It is such a pity that something so beautiful had to die away.

    Extremely funny yet very romantic

I just started reading manga's and I found this to be just what I wanted. Now obiously the humor in this manga is not for everyone but if you love gothic humor you will love the humor in My dead girlfriend. Not only is this a comedy but it has some romantic aspects in it as well. I hope everyone who reads this enjoys it as much as I did.
