Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Charles E. Kreinbucher
This is a very simple and delightful story for a beginning reader. The simplicity of the text and the illustrations is part of the book's charm. Mom, Dad and Pete have a troublesome dog named Buddy. When Dad commands Buddy, the dog does the opposite of whatever he is told. When told to sit, he stands. When told to get up, he sits. He runs away when he is told to come. He tears up the garbage, shreds the newspaper, and runs away with Pete's shoe. There is only one person who can communicate with the dog: the youngest brother, who is the book's narrator. He gives Buddy treats, as well as lots of hugs and kisses. The dog knows the boy loves him. One day, Buddy runs off with Pete's shoe and disappears. The whole family is upset, but they believe that the youngest brother can get him to come home. Fortunately, he is successful, and the story ends with them cuddling in bed. This is a very basic beginning reader with a controlled vocabulary, a limited word count, and predictable sentences. The book serves its purpose well, given that the focus is on sight words and simple sentences. Reviewer: Charles E. Kreinbucher
