Overview

Finding your one true love can be a Grimm experience!

After her boyfriend dumps her for her older sister, sophomore Savannah Delano wishes she could find a true prince to take her to the prom. Enter Chrissy (Chrysanthemum) Everstar: Savannah’s gum-chewing, cell phone–carrying, high heel-wearing Fair Godmother. Showing why she’s only Fair—because she’s not a very good fairy student—Chrissy mistakenly sends Savannah back in time to the Middle Ages, first as Cinderella, then as Snow White. Finally she sends Tristan, a boy in Savannah’s class, back instead to turn him into her prom-worthy prince. When Savannah returns to the Middle Ages to save Tristan, they must team up to defeat a troll, a dragon, and the mysterious and undeniably sexy Black Knight. Laughs abound in this clever fairy tale twist from a master of romantic comedy.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Rallison (All's Fair in Love, War, and High School) offers hilarious mishaps from the Middle Ages and modern times as her spurned teen heroine is granted three wishes. After being dumped by her boyfriend, Savannah pines for a prince of a boy who likes the "real" her, even if she is "occasionally late and disorganized." Not so coincidentally, Savannah's magical, fair (as in so-so) godmother pops in to make her "heart's desire" come true. Disasters ensue as Savannah is swept back several centuries. Her next two wishes compound her troubles, drawing an innocent 21st-century bystander (Tristan from the track team) to the age of courtly love and dragon-slaying. They are later joined by Savannah's sister and ex-boyfriend. Confrontations with an ogre, an invincible Black Knight and an angry enchanted goat are among the trials Savannah must endure as she is taught the inevitable valuable lessons along the way. Along with its delivery of the expected moral, "Be careful what you wish for," this comedy also allows its protagonist some believable emotional growth. Ages 10-14. (Jan.)

Kirkus Reviews
A decidedly non-serious 16-year-old Virginia student wishes herself into fairy-tale land in Rallison's giddy, ornately plotted fantasy. Savannah Delano pays more attention to her hair than her vocabulary, unlike her 18-year-old college-bound sister, Jane. When gorgeous track star Hunter dumps her for her more organized, responsible sibling, Savannah is offered three consolation wishes by a bored, shopoholic fairy godmother, "Chrissy" (short for Chrysanthemum). That Chrissy's just "fair" at her job comes clear when she fouls up Savannah's wish to find a prince who loves her for her true qualities, sending her back into the Middle Ages first as Cinderella, then Snow White, then as a damsel in distress who has to aid a poor warrior bard (fellow high-schooler Tristan Hawkins) in becoming a prince. Tristan proves both an intrepid prince and prom date, allowing Savannah to forget her heartbreak, as Rallison throws in everything but the kitchen sink in this goofy, not terribly convincing departure from her usual more realistic fare (All's Fair in Love, War and High School, 2003, etc.). (Fantasy. 10-14)

A great twist on a familiar fairy tale

Not all fairy godmothers are the answer to your problems apparently, at least, not fairy godmothers whose powers are only fair, instead of competent. Troubled teen, Tansy, gets caught on the wrong side of the law when her loser boyfriend sets her up and then bails out on her. But meeting the gorgeous police chief's son doesn't seem a bad trade-off. Every time Tansy's godmother tries to help, things get worst. Between a Robin hood who isn't so dreamy, and then a trip back in time to an evil king, a dangerous imp, deadly games, and a threat to the life of her future child, Tansy has had her fill of magic. It will take the love of her family and her own courage to get them all back home alive.

Filled with action, adventure, emotion and a little magic gone awry, My Fair Godmother is a must-read.

    I Also Recommend:

i loved this book!!! i keep reading it over and over again

i really enjoyed reading my fair godmother by janette rallison. i liked how most of this book was set in the middle ages. it was fun and creative and i loved guessing what the characters would do next. my favorite part was near the end :). i definently recommend this to anyone. its a fairy tale with a twist. if you liked this i would also recommend the twice upon a time series by wendy mass, Rapunzle: the one with all the hair and sleeping beauty: the one who took a really long nap. i also recommend wings by e.d baker and wings by aprilynne pike. and how to ditch your fairy by Justine Larbalestier and wicked lovely by melissa marr.

    Enjoyable!

Sixteen-year-old Savannah is devastated when her boyfriend dumps her for her studious older sister, and she dreams that her life will take a fairy-tale turn, complete with a handsome prince, a ball, and a happy ending. Her wishes bring the astonishing arrival of Chrissy, an aspiring fairy godmother. Still in training and not quite in command of her magical abilities, Chrissy sends Savannah through a chain of otherworldly mishaps, including visits to Cinderella and Snow White’s stories and finally to the Middle Ages, where Savannah defeats a cast of magical creatures and discovers that regular guys are sometimes preferable to princes.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book!!!! I got caught up in all the silliness of the characters, the crazy time-travel mishaps, and the overall fairy-tale plot that I found myself falling asleep at night with my book still open in the morning. Love that! Savannah comes off as the normal ditzy teenager who makes all the wrong choices by not being honest with what she really wants in life. I was fascinated where all the story takes the reader and, at the end, it seems like such an long & complex tale when really the book only a little over 300 pages. This is definitely a fun read after a long day at work!

Likes: The time travel wasn't kooky and got a lot more fun when more characters got involved.

Dislikes: I felt like Savannah should have stood up for herself a little more throughout the book.

This book was amazing. Janette Rallison has talent and great writing skills. You could totally sympathize with the characters, mostly because it was so well written. I love twisted fairy tales and I would recommmend this to any fantasy lover. It is hilarious and touching. Read the second one, "My Unfair Godmother" as well!:)

    Great twist on fairy godmother's

I enjoyed this book immensely. I wasn't sure if it was going to be any good, but thought I'd give it a try. The story really did not lack for me anywhere. Chrissy is the probably the most ditzy Fair Godmother anyone could get. Savannah ends up getting dumped by her boyfriend. He ended up dating Savannah's sister while she's still dating him. Seems like a pretty unforgivable thing to do right? So Chrissy shows up and gives her 3 wishes. This is where it gets good for me. Chrissy never really gives her what she wished for. But it all works out in the end. Everyone is happy. There is plenty of humor and I love that they go back to the Middle Ages.

    LOVE This>!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This book has almost everything in it. But one of the best things i could say about this book is the fact that it has soooooo much comedy. At some points in the book i had to stop myself from laughing because i was in a room with other people and i did not want them to think i was crazy, lol. Great book.
