Children's Literature
Snider brings to life Emma's family in this board book introducing the different members of a Mexican family. Emma (our narrator) takes us around her house and neighborhood and simply points out her relations. Snider shows Emma licking a spoon as her parents cook, playing with her pets, hitting a pinata with her cousins, and finally gathering around a large table with all of the people she has introduced to the reader. The text is easy and conversational, and relies on Snider's lively and colorful illustrations to make characters out of the people mentioned. Parents can certainly use this book to teach their children about their own relations and ask them to think about activities they share with their own family. I do not recommend using the glossary as it seems to have been composed by someone with an American accent in Spanish and a Spanish accent in English. This book is volume four in the "English/Spanish Foundations" series and won the Latino Hall of Fame Award as well as the Writer's Digest Certificate of Merit. 2001, Me+Mi Publishing, Ages 6 mo. to 6.
