Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The picture on the cover is the same one found in This is My Home. Not that it detracts because several of the stock photos are used more than once in the series. Families can be big or small, and they can consist of a variety of relatives from brothers and sisters to grandparents and parents. In these pages, the families all look happy, and they seem to have no problem sharing space and chores. Parents are shown as the main caregivers and the ones responsible for feeding and maintaining the health of their children. Families can teach skills and share in activities. Parents usually have jobs and in a pleasant switch, the mother is the doctor and the father is the teacher. Like school there are rules and jobs to help a family run smoothly such as the importance of communication, but I am not so sure if that message comes across when you see a picture of everyone in the family with a cell phone. Family history and culture is integrated a bit more smoothly in this book, but family fun appears to be just tacked on at the end. The opening pages contain a table of contents, and the closing page has a list of words to know and an index accompanied by pictures. Simple declarative sentences and questions accompanied by photographs of children from a variety of ethnic backgrounds set on crisp white pages make this an attractive book. It is a Level "G" book in the "My World" series. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
