Overview

The Academy-Award winning actress and avid foodie shares a sumptuous collection of recipes and gorgeous photographs celebrating the joy of preparing food for loved ones, a passion she learned from her beloved father.

As an actress, author, trendsetter, creator of goop.com, and host of the popular PBS series, Spain: On the Road Again, Gwyneth Paltrow is an icon of style and good taste around the world. As a young girl eating and cooking with her father, Bruce Paltrow, she developed a passion for food that has shaped how she lives today and strengthened her belief that time with family is a priority. Now in MY FATHER'S DAUGHTER, Paltrow shares her favorite family recipes along with personal stories of growing up with her father, Bruce Paltrow. She discusses how he has influenced her in the food she loves, how she involves her kids in cooking, and how she balances healthy food with homemade treats. And, for the first time, Paltrow offers a glimpse into her life as daughter, mother and wife, sharing her thoughts on the importance of family and togetherness.

Complete with 150 delicious ideas for breakfast, sandwiches and burgers, soups, salads, main dishes, sides, and desserts, this beautifully illustrated book includes full-color photos throughout, many featuring Paltrow at home with her family and friends. MY FATHER'S DAUGHTER is a luscious collection that will inspire readers to cook great food with the people who mean the most to them.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

From its title onward, the spirit of Gwyneth Paltrow's father permeates this book: "I will never forget how concentrated he looked in the kitchen, it almost looked like a grimace or a frown if you didn't know him. He practiced incredible care and precision when he was preparing food. It was as if the deliciousness of the food would convey the love he felt in direct proportion." That attentiveness and family warmth is an ever-present component of the Oscar-winning actress' sumptuous new cookbook. My Father's Daughter contains 150 recipes artfully adjusted from several world cuisines and presented with unusually meticulous cooking instructions. Separate chapters cover pantry provisions; soups; salads; burgers & sandwiches; pastas; main courses; side dishes; breakfast; and desserts.

Publishers Weekly
Award-winning actress and mother of two, Paltrow pays posthumous tribute to her much-adored father who passed along to her a deep love and appreciation for good food. From an early age, she was his eager eating companion and developed a diverse palate that relished everything from egg creams to oysters to blue cheese. Their dining ventures morphed into joint cooking get-togethers where dad instilled the notion that a meal made for one's family is an expression of love. This is evident in the simple and mostly healthy recipes she shares, as prepared for family and friends, in this warm and inviting collection. Paltrow showcases a wealth of dishes, from soups to pastas to main courses and more. Highlights include fried rice with kale and scallions, sole à la grenobloise, and her mother's blueberry muffins. A helpful pantry section includes recipes for basics such as slow-roasted tomatoes and numerous types of stocks. While many recipes are vegetarian, Paltrow does include meat dishes, including cheesy stuffed burgers and cassoulet. Her chapter on side dishes is superb and appealing enough to take center stage, especially her sautéed greens with onions and soy sauce, maple-Dijon roasted winter vegetables, and crispy potato and garlic cakes. Filled with charming personal anecdotes, this book convinces that healthy food can be delicious as well as good for you—and that a father's passion can endure. (Apr.)

Great vegetable recipes, plus delicious baked goods

I highly enjoyed this cookbook. So far I've mostly tried the side dishes. My favorite recipe so far is the maple-dijon roasted winter vegetables (page 194), which is easy to make and unbelievably delicious.

Some of the recipes require somewhat unusual ingredients, but there is a list at the back of the book of internet sources for these ingredients. For instance, the spiced apple crumb muffins require spelt, but it's a good (and tasty) recipe for those just starting to bake with flours other than all-purpose wheat.

easy to follow- simple yet sophisticated

I am really enjoying this cookbook. I have tried a handful of recipes and they have all been great- from a rotiserie style chicken with corn polenta, to the oatmeal cookies everything is fresh and on the healthy side. The pictures and stories made flipping through it the first time very enjoyable. I highly recommend it.

    Nearly burn my house down!

I am a fan of Gynth so I thought I'd love her cookbook. She acts like these recipes are something unique when they are really just run of the mill recipes that are nothing special. Wow, pancakes. How original. And with her soup recipes, she gives you advice to nearly burn your house down by letting it cook overnight. Hello, if you leave your stove on overnight, you're asking for trouble. i nearly burned my house down with sleeping kids inside. I returned and won't be buying again. Keep your average recipes to yourself, Gynth.

Normally, I don't review books. I wouldn't describe myself as a big Gwyneth fan, I liked her in Sliding Doors- but I don't know anything about her or have any opinions one way or the other. That being said, I love this cookbook and find myself identifying and loving the personal touch and anecdotes about each recipe. I'm a self described foodie and have been looking for a healthier recipe book and this one fit the mold. I did have to find some additional products but she does provide alternatives so it isn't mandatory (note: most of the 'specialty' items were at Whole foods and not easily spoilt so I didn't feel like I wasted money). Oh, and the recipes are delicous! My healthy-protesting husband can't tell the difference!

Loved it - Don't Judge A Book By It's Author

So many people are going to judge this book just because of who wrote it. DON'T DO that - you'll miss out on a great cookbook.

First off, the book is beautiful. The pages are intricate and there's something special with numerous mouthwatering photos. Gwen pushes toward keeping things organic, whole and family friendly. There are some more basic recipes - like a macrobiotic hot sauce and pasta recipe - as well as more advanced, fancy things like a Chinese duck, roasted whole fish and more. The book has salad, soup, pasta, burger, main dish, side and desert areas with recipes of varying levels in each section. Some are easy, some are harder. Some are healthy, some are not so much.

Great book - the 5 recipes or so I've made from it have all been PHENOMENAL (one of her muffin recipes has been made just about everyday the last week in our household!). Get the book, give it a try and forget about who wrote it or what movie you saw her in.
