Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathleen Karr
How delightful it is to run away once more with Elmer Elevator on his mission of mercy to rescue the blue dragon of Wild Island! And how easy it is to believe our practical hero's impeccable logic in all things. Of course twenty-five peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are sufficient to feed the stowaway on his voyage to the Island of Tangerina. Naturally thirty-one tangerines will see him through the adventures of Wild Island. Oh, but such adventures! Gannett's story just keeps expanding the boundaries of her surrealist vision. Then, the wonderfully correct wild animal drawings of Ruth Chrisman Gannett are added to illustrate this vision. Realistic these pencil sketches may seem—until the lion ties his mane in ribbons, the rhinoceros begins using toothbrush and paste to polish his horn, and the crocodile/lollipop bridge turns completely mind-blowing-and beats the pants off Aesop, to boot. Yes, this is the 60th Anniversary Edition of the beloved Newbery Honor book. It retains the marvelous color endpaper maps of Tangerine and Wild Island, while adding an author's note and brief biographies of both its writer, Ruth Stiles Gannett, and its illustrator, Ruth Chrisman Gannett (R.S.G.'s stepmother.) The end result remains irresistible. Reviewer: Kathleen Karr

Meet the Author

RUTH STILES GANNETT wrote My Father's Dragon just a few years after her graduation from Vassar College in 1944. It was an immediate success, becoming a Newbery Honor Book, and was soon followed by two sequels, Elmer and the Dragon and The Dragons of Blueland. All three dragon stories have been continuously in print in the more than 40 years since their publication. The author's other books include Katie and the Sad Noise and The Wonderful House-Boat- Train. She is married to the artist and calligrapher Peter Kahn. They have seven daughters and seven grandchildren.

Classic stories never grow old. Year after year my elementary school students delight in the clever ways Elmer is able to outsmart the animals of Wild Island in order to rescue the baby dragon. There is a special magic about a place populated talking animals and where wild tangerine trees provide an easy snack. In a modern world full of books with street-smart characters that resort to bathroom humor, it is amazing to hear that My Father's Dragon is a perennial favorite. The Deluxe Edition brings back the color maps of the original inner covers and the updated forward by the author reminds me that the spirit of this story still echoes through today.
