Meet the Author

RUTH STILES GANNETT wrote My Father's Dragon just a few years after her graduation from Vassar College in 1944. It was an immediate success, becoming a Newbery Honor Book, and was soon followed by two sequels, Elmer and the Dragon and The Dragons of Blueland. All three dragon stories have been continuously in print in the more than 40 years since their publication. The author's other books include Katie and the Sad Noise and The Wonderful House-Boat- Train. She is married to the artist and calligrapher Peter Kahn. They have seven daughters and seven grandchildren.

    A wonderful adventure

    My Father's Dragon

This story is about a little boy named Elmer. Elmer wanted to fly very badly. An old alley cat told him that he could go to Wild Island to fly. He told Elmer about a baby dragon. The baby dragon was forced to fly the animals across the river. So Elmer goes to Wild Island to save the dragon. Many wild animals on the island catch Elmer. He gets away by tricking them. I kept wondering: Will Elmer be able to save the dragon?
My favorite character in this book was the mouse. I like the mouse because he mixes up his words and is very funny.
I like the book because it was an adventure. Each chapter has a new animal with a different problem. To escape Elmer had to solve each problem.
I would recommend this book to my friends because it is a very good book and it is very well written.

    A lifetime favorite!

I loved reading this book when I was a kid. I have now had the pleasure of reading it to my 6 year old daughter. She could not get enough - "one more chapter please!" Imaginative and silly, perfect for kids.

    Highly Recommended

This was the first chapter book I read to my sons. Even after 20 years I still remember how much they loved it. The chapters were the perfect length to sustain their interest as a stepping stone from picture books. I plan to purchase it for my nookcolor so my granddaughter can enjoy this classic.

    classical and exciting

I like to read what my daughter is reading in her 1st grade class then follow up the stories with her.We were having fun since we both know the characters and events. It's funny and a colorful story that we both can't wait to read the whole series. But ,I was warned by her teacher not to read ahead of her or else I will spoil the fun she's having with the whole class.

    A reviewer

A Barnes & Noble worker suggested this book when I was looking for a great early chapter book type story to read aloud to my kids. Great illustrations to keep their young attentions and very imaginative story line. Thank you B & N for the smiles and giggles!

    An enchanting, must read!

I first read this story when i was in the third grade, but even now I'll catch myself reading it from time to time. Now i love to read it to my younger sister. Edgar and Dragon take you through such a fun adventure. This story will bring out your imagination and sense of adventure. I also reccomend its two sequals 'Edgar and Dragon' and 'The Dragons of Blueland'.

    The cutest little dragon

This series of books is a wonderful series. this book is about a little boy who helps a baby dragon be freed from wild island where cruel animals have imprisoned him. The cat who helps the little boy was very smart and told elmer what to bring ultimitly saving elmer's life countless times. i got the first book when i was about 6 or 7, and fell in love with and was heart-broken when i couldn't find the sequels. i was 10 when i bought the sequels and was overjoyed and soon fell in love with them too. i found them when the barnes&noble store opened in a nearby town.
