Overview

My Father's Dragon is a children's novel by Ruth Stiles Gannett about a young boy, Elmer Elevator, who runs away to Wild Island to rescue a baby dragon. Both a Newbery Honor Book and an ALA Notable Book, it is the first book of a trilogy whose other titles are Elmer and the Dragon and The Dragons of Blueland. It was made into an anime film titled, Elmer's Adventures: My Father's Dragon. The narrative mode is unusual, in that the narrator refers to the protagonist only as "my father", giving the impression that this is a true story that happened long ago. The illustrations within the book are black and white done with a grease crayon on a grained paper, done by Ruth Chrisman Gannett. The story was cited as a runner-up for the Newbery Medal in 1949 and was an ALA Notable Book. It was also nominated for the Ambassador Book Award in 1948. In the story, we meet some tigers, a rhinoceros, a lion, and a gorilla all leading to the baby dragon. There is also a river, an island, and a bridge.

My Father's Dragon This story is about a little boy named Elmer. Elmer wanted to fly very badly. An old alley cat told him that he could go to Wild Island to fly. He told Elmer about a baby dragon. The baby dragon was forced to fly the animals across the river. So Elmer goes to Wild Island to save the dragon. Many wild animals on the island catch Elmer. He gets away by tricking them. I kept wondering: Will Elmer be able to save the dragon? My favorite character in this book was the mouse. I like the mouse because he mixes up his words and is very funny. I like the book because it was an adventure. Each chapter has a new animal with a different problem. To escape Elmer had to solve each problem. I would recommend this book to my friends because it is a very good book and it is very well written.

Wonderful tale to encourage readers to use their imaginations to delve into adventures and a world of fantasy. *Comical at times and very entertaining. *Great escape for the summer. *Fascinating way to encourage readers to enjoy leisure time reading, just reading for entertainment.

My eight year old son really enjoyed this book and we just finished Elmer and the dragon. Cant wait for Blueland! This is a short chapter book, good for building up confidence and speed.

I loved reading this book when I was a kid. I have now had the pleasure of reading it to my 6 year old daughter. She could not get enough - "one more chapter please!" Imaginative and silly, perfect for kids.

I like to read what my daughter is reading in her 1st grade class then follow up the stories with her.We were having fun since we both know the characters and events. It's funny and a colorful story that we both can't wait to read the whole series. But ,I was warned by her teacher not to read ahead of her or else I will spoil the fun she's having with the whole class.

A Barnes & Noble worker suggested this book when I was looking for a great early chapter book type story to read aloud to my kids. Great illustrations to keep their young attentions and very imaginative story line. Thank you B & N for the smiles and giggles!

I first read this story when i was in the third grade, but even now I'll catch myself reading it from time to time. Now i love to read it to my younger sister. Edgar and Dragon take you through such a fun adventure. This story will bring out your imagination and sense of adventure. I also reccomend its two sequals 'Edgar and Dragon' and 'The Dragons of Blueland'.

Read in third grade had to get so got from svholastic book order. Recommend to fantasy lovers also dragon lovers. There are other books to this series too, but this one is the best. I love the book because in the front of the book it shows a map of the islands. The author really descibes how aelmer was feeling . His dad was really cool. My favorite charecter in the whole story was the cat. This is one of the best books ever. I also recomened it to people who like to go on adventers. This is a great book for all ages. Even tough it is not a thick book the adventer is for all ages. ~Elizabeth B
