Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
A charming book with a precious story of a mother bear letting her baby cub know that, although there are many, many different and interesting bears in this world, the one she loves the most is her own little sleepy cub. Brown bears, black bears, polar bears, panda bears, spectacled bears, and sloth bears are illustrated in bold drawings that are sure to enchant children. Bears from around the world are shown frolicking in fields, climbing trees, swimming, eating honey, eating fish or bamboo, and just sleeping. Some bears hunt for food at night, and some are shown looking at the starlit sky. It is an excellent choice of a book for an older sibling or a parent or grandparent to read to a preschooler at bedtime. At the end of the book, there is a page of facts about the various bears showing a drawing of each bear described. The book is reinforced for library use. 2003, Whispering Coyote/Charlesbridge Publishing, Ages 5 to 10.

PreS-Gr 2-A mother bear tells her cub about all the kinds of bears there are in the world as she cuddles her baby to sleep. Large, naturalistic pictures done in soft-focus pastel depict a variety of bears eating, exploring, and lying around. Most of the illustrations are given lush two-page spreads that highlight the creatures' personalities and habitats. The brief text rhymes, though it doesn't always flow smoothly. Still, parents will enjoy curling up with their own children and teddy bears, and exploring the story together, which concludes with the cub fast asleep and well loved. A page at the back of the book gives some brief information about the different species featured in the story. -Susan Oliver, Tampa-Hillsborough Public Library System, FL Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.
