Overview

Charismatic conductor Keith Lockhart leads the Boston Pops Orchestra in celebrating the centenary of Broadway legend Richard Rodgers's birth. Offering overtures and famous show tunes as well as film and television music, the program is a wide-ranging and spirited overview of the composer's engaging work. There are big hits, naturally, such as "Shall We Dance?" from The King and I, but there are also highlights from his early, less well known work, like the fun-filled "Mountain Greenery" from The Garrick Gaieties of 1926, or "March of the Clowns" from 1935's Nursery Ballet, recorded here for the first time. The Pops, consisting of members of the venerable Boston Symphony, play like pros for Lockhart, carrying off these pieces with enthusiastic, polished performances. And vocalists Martina McBride, Jason Danieley, and Colin Raye remind us of Rodgers's partnership with lyricist Oscar Hammerstein on "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music, "I Have Dreamed" from The King and I, and the title song from The Sound of Music. Here is a timely tribute to one of America's greatest theatrical composers from America's most celebrated pops orchestra.
