All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
This Broadway cast album recounts the music from a minor 1992 musical based on the 1982 film about the appearance of a swashbuckling but drunken movie star rather like Errol Flynn on a live 1950s television comedy show rather like Your Show of Shows. Composer Stephen Flaherty and lyricist Lynn Ahrens previously had succeeded on Broadway with Once on This Island. Working with a cast led by comedienne Andrea Martin, Lainie Kazan re-creating her role from the movie and, as the troublesome star, Tim Curry of Rocky Horror Picture Show fame, Flaherty and Ahrens provide standard Broadway musical comedy fare. So What If It Isn't A Classic?

"My Favorite Year" is filled with beautiful, quirky music. You just can't get bathroom humor better than "Funny/The Duck Joke". Tim Curry is fantastic as Alan Swann, the swashbuckling hero. He brings life and laughter with him, but he can also make you cry. Hence my facination with "The Lights Come Up." He's the star of the cast, and the reason why this CD is so great.
