Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
In simple, clear prose Bauer presents Harriet Tubman as an American hero. With just one or two lines on each page, she recounts Tubman's early life in slavery and her cruel treatment by various masters to whom she was hired out. After Tubman escaped to Philadelphia, she made repeated trips back home to Maryland in order to guide scores of fugitive slaves safely to freedom in the North. Tubman's contributions to the Union cause in the Civil War included duties as a nurse, cook and spy. After the war, she became involved in the women's suffrage movement. The full-color illustrations expand the text. Careful attention to period details and clothing evoke the setting and time period. Facial expressions and the body language in the drawings depict the fears and dangers of living in, and attempting to escape, slavery. Tubman's incredible determination and bravery come through in both words and pictures. Part of the "My First Biography" series, this is recommended as an introduction to the subject for both beginning readers and for preschool and early primary grade children.
