Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Grandpa has taken what seem to be a brother and sister for an outing, in this case a hike. The younger boy is a bit reluctant and wants to go home. His attention is caught by a bird picking up a leaf and flying off; he tries to follow it. The predictable story then leads to an enjoyable outing where they marvel at a spider web and waterfall, look at flowers, swing on branches, and observe other wild animals. The grandfather looks a bit like a gnome, and the faces of all are not particularly appealing nor are the pastel colors. They give the book a washed-out look, and use much too much pink and yellow. While the message to get out and enjoy nature is a good one, this book would not be a first choice to convey it. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

An inspired board book with an empathic message

My ten month-old loves this book. He has just learned how to turn board pages and this is one of his favorites to page through over and over again. I appreciate how the illustrations equally tell the story. My five and a half year-old son is just learning to read and enjoys sharing this book with his baby brother. The older one can identify with the main character's experience going on a hike, too.

I have read many board books and I now realize that a lot of them are picture books for older children forced into this format with too much text. Another current set of board books are empty design concepts geared towards trendy adult aesthetics. My First Hike is refreshingly different. It is simple and in tune with with the thoughts of young children, conveying a lovely message about family, gratitude, and simple wonders in nature.

Perfect for the very young child

The endearing and warmly colorful illustrations are so welcoming to a very young child, and the quietly supportive story about learning to enjoy new experiences is just right. My little grand-nephew loves this book! And so do I!

    MY FIRST HIKE

I gave this little book to my young great-grandson, and the whole family and I were so delighted with it that I gave four additional copies to some of his little friends. The book is beautiful. The story is simple but uplifting and instructive. The illustrations are exquisite, and I hope we will hear more from this talented artist-author.

    Recommended Board Book!

The gentle, quiet beauty of both the story and illustrations--so perfectly matched--powerfully captures, inspires, and promotes the inner delight and expansiveness of spirit and living that the observation of the natural world helps us all discover. The book teaches by almost silent example how to grow and develop fearlessly and joyously--a deep message of appreciation and love that speaks to children as well as adults.
