Editorial Reviews

Carolyn Phelan
unger for use with an adult. In this bright and snazzy introduction to making musical instruments, every project looks appealing. Like the other books in this popular, large-format series, this one features photographs of brightly colored objects against white backgrounds. The initial photos of instruments and the supplies needed to make them are shown full size, while smaller, bordered photos demonstrate how to make and play most of the instruments. Projects include making shakers, tambourines, drums, bells, guiros, triangles, xylophones, flowerpot bells, pan pipes, bubble organs, horns, rubber-band boxes, and banjos. Most of the supplies shown (poster paints, string, plastic, bottles, straws, pencils, flowerpots) will be easy to come by, though local craft suppliers may be perplexed by the bottle labeled "clear glaze." On this side of the Atlantic, anyway, the commonly available glazes are toxic and not recommended for use by young children. Some activities suggest that the child ask an adult for assistance. But the use of an asterisk and footnote telling kids to ask an adult to cut through a plastic tub is insufficient; a child too young to use a sharp knife safely is probably too young to recognize the meaning of an asterisk. That detail aside, this is an attractive source of inspiration and instruction.
