Four board books join Kar-Ben's series of titles celebrating and explaining the Jewish holidays for toddlers. My First Seder shows a simple progression of events during the Passover meal. Children ready themselves for the Purim Parade, by creating costumes for the characters of Queen Esther, Mordecai and Haman. In Let's Build a Sukkah, the neighborhood pitches in to raise the sukkah and decorate it for the Succos celebration. On each successive night of Chanukah, one of the Rainbow Candles is lit, until there are eight plus the shamash, or helper candle. These durable board books are just right for showing the solemn ceremonies and joyful traditions involved in each holiday. Bright pictures show family and friends gathered round, but the main focus, happily, is the participation of the children. (1-5)

ea. vol: illus. by Katherine Janus Kahn. unpaged. Kar-Ben Copies. 1986. BD $4.95. PreS-Gr 1 These four attractive board books show young children celebrating four Jewish holidays. The text in each is minimal, usually just one line, or one word, to a page (Rainbow Candles has the most text, with a two- to four-line verse on each page). The illustrations are colorful and lively. A little girl is shown counting the candles on the Chanukah menorah as one candle is added for each of the eight days of the holiday. For Sukkoth, children build a sukkah. A dress-up masquerade parade is the highlight of the Purim celebration. A very simple, one-word-to-a-page description of a little boy's first Passover seder gives a toddler's-eye view of that ritual meal. These books can show preschoolers the fun and enjoyment that these holidays bring. There is no attempt to relate background or significance of the holidays, but even at this very simple level, an adult may want to give some additional bits of information about the holidays. Fine additions to public and parochial school libraries where very easy books about Jewish holidays are wanted. Ruth Shire, Mount Vernon Public Library, N.Y.
