Most college bands are at their best during ensembles but display their extreme youth and inexperience during their solos. The 2006 version of the Mt. Hood Jazz Band is more mature than most of these groups. Each of their saxophonists shows the ability to solo, the orchestra plays clean ensembles even during the most difficult arrangements, and an infectious spirit pervades. The repertoire is wide ranging, highlighted by the Stan Kenton-inspired "Basso Urnesto," a reworking of "Stella by Starlight" as "Stellar," the shy but sly "Li'l James," "88 Basie Street" and a reharmonized "My Foolish Heart."
