Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
A big plus for this large format book, is the spiral binding that lets the pages lay flat. Since the book is geared to younger children, the ability to put it on a table or desk and have the pages lay out for reading and looking is an excellent idea. The book is a dictionary so it is organized alphabetically. The 400 word choices are interestingafter, always, answer are just a couple from the opening "A" page. It would probably be helpful if parents and teachers read the opening note. It tells them that the book is set up like a traditional dictionary with definitions and photographs to illustrate every word. In addition, there is a sentence or caption for each picture showing how the word is used. They contain interesting facts, games and challenge questions. There is plenty of humor and trivia that kids will surely be sharing with family and friends. The editor refers to the compilation as a "word explorer" and that does seem to be appropriate. The alphabet runs down the side of each page and highlights the letter featured on the page. Many of the words are what you would expect, but I always enjoy flipping to letters such a Q, U, X and Z to see what the editor has come up with. The "Q" page has queen, question, quiet and quilt while "Z" features zebra, zigzag, zipper, and zoo. It is a well done first picture dictionary and the letters of the alphabet in upper and lower case decorate the brightly colored end papers. 2003, St Martin's Press,
