Overview

The final volume in Bowles’s survey of his garden through the year has always been the most elusive in the antiquarian book market. This reprint includes a map of the garden at Myddelton House to aid the reader in visualizing its design and layout, and like the earlier volumes, features a nomenclatural appendix to update obsolete plant names.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This title marked the third installation in Bowles's year-long observations that began with My Garden in Spring and My Garden in Summer. Though concentrating on what primarily is the dormant time of the year, the author contends that gardens nonetheless need to be maintained in the colder months. Since plants are still plants and dirt is still dirt, this 1915 volume will continue to bear fruit in appropriate collections.
Booknews
In this facsimile of the original 1915 edition, comprising the final volume in E.A. Bowles' classic garden trilogy, the reader is led through his garden one last time before winter sets in. Includes fine plant descriptions, as well as wit, philosophy, and humor in abundance. Includes b&w photographs of the garden at Myddelton, with a modern map and a nomenclatural update. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.

Meet the Author

Edward Augustus Bowles (1865–1954) was renowned as a gardener, plantsman, and author. His life's work was his garden at Myddelton House, which is now being restored to its original condition as a tribute to his memory. He was a prolific writer on gardening as well as an avid painter of botanical subjects. His Handbook of Crocus and Colchicum and Handbook of Narcissus are the standard works of reference for these plants, but he is best known for his popular books My Garden in Spring, My Garden in Summer, and My Garden in Autumn and Winter.

The author was a vice-president of the Royal Horticultural Society and the recipient of the Victoria Medal of Honour in Horticulture. Among his other awards were the Veitch Memorial Medal in gold for his work on Crocus and other garden plants, the Peter Barr Memorial Cup for his work on Narcissus, and a Grenfell Medal in gold for his botanical paintings.
