Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Mama Bear leaves a long list of instructions with Grandma when she drops the cubs off for a visit. Grandma ignores or chooses to misinterpret all of them. As soon as Mama leaves, Grandma invites the cubs into the kitchen to bake cookies. Then Grandpaw takes them fishing. Diving into a trunk of old clothes, the cubs dress up and put on a fashion show. At lunch time, Grandma tells the cubs to ignore their green beans and eat dessert first. Naptime comes late. Grandma takes the cubs into her bedroom and jumps on the bed with them before they all fall asleep. When they awake, she takes them into her garden to admire a rose and a bird. Ignoring their specified bedtime, Grandpaw pops corn and the cubs watch cartoons before dozing off. Front and back pages remind readers that grandparents love them. According to this book, grandparents show their love by ignoring the rules and routines of parents. The static text is rescued by charming pastel illustrations, which convey a sense of joy. This syrupy sweet story will appeal to some adults and will likely be shared with children as a result. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
