Overview

"My Happiness Bears No Relation to Happiness is the biography of an extraordinary man and, by extension, the story of a charged and fateful epoch. In this groundbreaking book, Adina Hoffman reflects on the ways that war and peace register in daily life and on the alchemical means by which experience is transformed into art. Taha Muhammad Ali was born in 1931 in the Galilee village of Saffuriyya and was forced to flee during the 1948 war. He journeyed with his family on foot to Lebanon, and a year later he returned to find his village destroyed. An autodidact, he has run a souvenir shop in Nazareth ever since, meanwhile evolving into a writer whom National Book Critics Circle-winner Eliot Weinberger has called "perhaps the most accessible and delightful poet alive today." Composed with a novelist's eye for detail and a detective's fascination with getting to the bottom of dramatic events, this is the first biography of a Palestinian writer ever to be published in English. It places Taha Muhammad Ali's life in the dynamic context of the lives of his predecessors, friends, and peers. Hoffman's linked portraits of the leading Palestinian writers of the last century provide a startling panorama of a singular literary world that has, until now, remained largely unknown to readers in the West.
