Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Loretta Caravette
My Healthy Body is filled with basic information every kids should know about taking care of themselves. It begins with sleep and understanding why sleep is important. It covers exercise. "Exercise makes your muscles stronger...oxygen and nutrients get delivered to your tissues." The nutrition section has a list of important nutrients and how to get them in foods such as "Vitamin D: Helps keep bones strong (found in milk, eggs, and fatty fish)." What this book also covers is the importance of vaccines, eye care, dental care, and hygiene. It even covers the importance of learning and the importance of family and friends. "Your family is your foundation, always there when you need support." There are "Fun Facts" in each section, posed as a true or false question: "old-fashioned toothpaste contained such things as crushed bones, eggshells, oyster shells, cinnamon, burnt toast, charcoal, soap and chalk. (True)." Also, the book gently introduces medical terms, labeled MT. For example: "the circulation of blood through your heart and blood vessels or MT: cardiovascular system." The term Cardiovascular System may be new to the reader but it is clearly explained. This easy to follow, well-written book would be a good introduction to help your child begin to know why it is important to take care of him or herself and some suggestions on how to go about doing so. Parents might find it the perfect way to reinforce their own ideas and rules. Reviewer: Loretta Caravette
School Library Journal
Gr 3–5—From the pastel covers to the final affirming messages, these titles offer solid information in a calm, approachable style. Healthy Body includes the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of good health, covering expected topics such as sleep, exercise, vaccines, nutrition, and hygiene, but also including relationships and mental stimulation. Itchy Body begins on the outside and moves inward addressing dry skin, the various causes for inflammation, insects, infections, internal catalysts, and stress. An introduction reminds readers to get regular medical checkups and outlines the topic. Every section begins with a bold heading and most conclude with a "Fun Fact," "True or False?" question and answer, and, occasionally, a "Doctor Says" point. Cartoon spot art amplifies the information on every page, breaking up the text that is written in a slightly oversize font. The books are intended to be read from beginning to end; there is no table of contents or index. The overall tone will reassure readers much like a visit to a favorite family doctor.—Carol S. Surges, Longfellow Middle School, Wauwatosa, WI
