Overview

My Heart Is A Stone That Bleeds is Karl P. Whitehead's personal account of growing up with the alcoholic legacy created by successive generations of alcoholics. The story chronicles the difficulties presented when a non-drinking child tries to break free from the abuse of the alcoholic and the denial of the co-dependent family unit.

The book contains many vignettes of a very personal nature outlining the unpredictable aspects of the alcoholic household. Explored among these are the life long effects of child abuse and denial that shatter attempts at healthy future relationships. All is not lost when hope and courage prevail and the process of recovery for the non-drinking abused child is sustained through vision, candor and diligence.

This book presents very difficult material to the CHILDREN of alcoholics, not alcoholics themselves nor so-called recovering alcoholics. Battered and neglected children of alcoholics have specific experiences and future needs not relished nor understood by the alcoholics themselves. These life experiences written about here are common and the emotional impact devastating. I honor the words in this book as courageous and recomend it to any one who suffered at the hands of an alcoholic parent. If we were to take our cues from those who have abused us, or the people like them, we as adult children would never progress through life at all.

I recently got an email telling me about this book, and since I like these kinds of books eventhough they make me cry and feel bad for the person being abused, I like them. So I have to go buy the book so I can read it.

This book reveals for the first time the deeply secret world of the alcoholic family, its denial, abuse and co-dependence. The author finally breaks the alcoholic legacy of anger and undefined anxiety to tell his story and become an heroic figure to others trapped in this adult children of alcoholics world. A must read.

This portrait of an abused child speaks volumes to all adult children of alcoholics. In it is a story in three parts. The first part tells the story of growing up in an unpredictable household permeated by alcoholism and denial. The second part is about the discoveries made about the alcoholic parent after his death and the death of the enabler. The third part is about the resolution the writer comes to after counseling and careful analysis of the impact of good and bad role models. This is a well written book with tragedy, humor and a wonderful ending that inspires hope. After you begin reading you can't put it down.
