Prologue : Getting Started with iPhone
The good news is that getting started with an iPhone is a simple, painless process. You've got your hands on one, so it's time to get going.
Preparing iTunesBefore you can use the iPhone, you have to download and install iTunes on your computer or make sure that if you are using the most current version if it's already installed. To get started, jump into any of the following sections that apply to your particular situation.
Downloading and Installing iTunes on a Windows PCOpen a web browser.
Move to http://www.apple.com/itunes.
Click the Download iTunes button. You move to the Download iTunes screen.
Uncheck the two check boxes.
Click Download iTunes Free. The installer application starts.
Follow the onscreen instructions to install iTunes.
Updating iTunesMac Installation Section Missing? - If you happen to be wondering why there isn't a section on installing iTunes on a Mac, it's because Macs come with iTunes pre-installed. If you weren't wondering, never mind.
Open iTunes.
On a Windows PC, choose Help, Check for Updates. On a Mac, choose iTunes, Check for Updates. The application checks your version of iTunes against the current version.
If you are using the current version, click OK to clear the dialog telling you so. If you aren't using the current version, you're prompted to download and install it. Follow the onscreen instructions to download and install the newerversion.
Open iTunes.
Click iTunes Store. You connect to the Internet and move into the iTunes Store.
Click Sign In. The Sign In dialog appears.
Already Logged In? - If you see an Apple ID instead of the Sign In button, iTunes is already logged into an iTunes Store account. If the account is yours, skip the rest of these steps. If the account isn't yours, click the account shown and click Sign Out so that you can create or sign in to your own account.
Click Create New Account. You move to the first screen in the account creation process.
Read the information and follow the onscreen instructions to create an Apple ID. After you complete the steps, you receive your Apple ID and password.
Installing and Activating iPhoneGot iTunes Store Account? - You can log in to an existing iTunes Store account by entering your Apple ID and password and then clicking Sign In. Skip the rest of these steps.
Get ready for this part of the process by taking all the goodies out of iPhone's box. For now, you'll need the phone, the USB-to-Dock cable, and the Dock. Take all the protective plastic off each item.
Connect the USB end of the cable to an available USB port on your computer.
Connect the other end of the cable to the Dock.
Gently place the iPhone into the Dock by sliding its bottom into the Dock until it connects. When it connects, you see the Apple logo on the iPhone as it starts up. The Activation screen appears briefly, iTunes becomes active on your computer, and your iPhone appears on the iTunes Source list and in the Content pane.
Click Continue. You see the AT&T account screen prompting you to choose whether you are a new or existing AT&T customer. If you are a new customer, you have to create an account with AT&T and activate one or more iPhones. If you already have an AT&T account, you can replace your current account with iPhone or add it as a new line. For simplicity's sake, the rest of these steps assume that you are a new customer and are activating one iPhone. The other scenarios work out the same way—just read and follow the onscreen instructions.
Select the AT&T account option applicable to you.
Click Continue. What you see depends on the option you selected; the rest of these steps assume that you are new to AT&T and are activating a single iPhone. You move to the Transfer Your Mobile Number screen that enables you to move an existing number onto iPhone.
Not So Fast - If other applications, such as iPhoto on a Mac, open when you connect the iPhone, quit them until you've activated the iPhone.
If you want to move an existing number onto the iPhone, complete the form. If you want a new number, leave the form empty. Click Continue.
If you choose to move an existing number onto the iPhone, the activation process can take up to six hours. The rest of these steps assume that you are putting a new number on the iPhone.
You see the Select Your Monthly AT&T Plan screen. The plans you see depend on where you live, but the information should be self-explanatory. At press time, the differences between the plans were monthly cost versus talk time; all plans included unlimited data access.
You can also add more text messages to your account if you need them. At press time, all accounts included 200 text messages per month.
Select the plan and text message options you want and click Continue. You see the iTunes Account screen.
Enter your Apple ID and Password and click Continue.
Sooner or Later, You'll Need an Apple ID - If you didn't already create an Apple ID, leave the form blank and click Continue. You're led through the creation of an iTunes Store account, which you must have to activate an iPhone.
Enter or confirm information as you are prompted, and click Continue. You see the Billing Information screen.
Provide the required billing information and click Continue.
If prompted to confirm your address, do so and click Continue. After you provided all necessary information, the terms and conditions screen appears.
If you have hours to kill and are legally minded, read the terms and conditions; when you're done, check the check box and click Continue and then repeat the process with the next legal screen. You see the Review Your Information screen.
If everything looks correct, click Continue. You see the activation processing screen on your computer and on your iPhone.
When the process is complete, you see the Completing Activation screen. The most important bit of information on this screen is your new phone number.
AT&T begins activating your iPhone. When it is active, you see the iPhone is activated screen on your iPhone.
Click Continue. You see the Set Up Your iPhone screen.
Enter a name for your iPhone in the Name field.
If you want your calendars, contacts, email accounts, and so on to sync, leave the check box checked.
Click Done. iTunes moves the information from your computer onto iPhone. You see the sync progress screens on your computer and on iPhone.
After iPhone is active, set up, and in sync, you can start using all its great features. You'll want to start by learning to use its cell phone features, moving iTunes music and video onto it, syncing podcasts, and so on. And that's where the rest of this book comes in.
Touring iPhoneiPhone Memory Not Unlimited - If you leave the check box checked in step 16, it is likely that not all information will fit onto iPhone unless your iTunes Library is fairly small. If all the content can't be moved onto iPhone, you see prompts explaining this and suggesting what you can do to complete the sync. (Sync is the action of moving data between iPhone and computers.) Just follow the onscreen instructions to complete the sync process. Later in this book, you learn how to be selective about what moves to iPhone so that the data on iPhone is what you want.
Take a quick look at iPhone's physical controls and ports and learn how you move around its screens.
Ringer Off/On This switch determines whether iPhone rings when a call comes in. Slide it toward the front of iPhone to hear the ringer; a Bell icon appears on the screen to indicate the ringer is on. Slide it toward the back of iPhone to turn the ringer off; a red dot appears on the switch, and the bell with a line through it appears on iPhone's screen to indicate that the ringer is off.
Volume Press the upper part of the rocker switch to increase volume; press the lower part of the switch to decrease volume. The volume that is controlled depends on what you are doing. If iPhone isn't busy, its ringer volume is controlled. If you are listening to music or watching video, the volume of what you are listening to or watching is controlled. If you are talking on the phone, the volume of the call is controlled.
Dock Use this port to connect iPhone into its Dock or to connect the cable directly to iPhone.
Home Press this button to move to the all-important iPhone Home screen.
Wake/Sleep Press this to lock iPhone's controls and to turn off its screen. Press it again to start using iPhone. Note that if you are using iPhone to listen to music when you press this, the music keeps playing while iPhone is locked. You also use this button to turn iPhone off and turn it off again.
Headphones Plug iPhone's headphones into this port.
Camera iPhone's camera lens is located on its backside near the top.
When iPhone is locked and you press the Wake/Sleep button or the Home button, iPhone's screen activates, and you see the Unlock slider. Drag your finger to the right to unlock iPhone so that you can work with it. You move to the iPhone Home screen or to the last screen you were using.
In most cases, you should just put iPhone to sleep when you aren't using it instead of shutting it off. It doesn't use much power when it sleeps but will wake up quickly when you want to start using it again.
To change iPhone's volume, press the up or down volume buttons. An icon pops up to show you which volume you are changing and the relative volume setting. When the volume is set, release the volume button.
If you want to turn iPhone off, press and hold the Wake/Sleep button until the red slider appears on the screen. Drag the slider to the right to shut iPhone down.
To restart iPhone, press and hold the Wake/Sleep button until the Apple logo appears on the screen. In a moment, you see iPhone's Home screen, and it's ready for you to use again.
Using This BookThe Time Is Always Handy - If you use iPhone as a watch, the way I do, just press the Wake/Sleep button. The current time and date appear; if you don't unlock it, iPhone goes back to sleep.
This book has been designed to help you transform iPhone into your iPhone by helping you learn to use it easily and quickly. As you can tell, the book relies heavily on pictures to show you how iPhone works. It is also task-focused so that you can quickly learn the specific steps to follow to do all the cool things you can do with iPhone.
Using iPhone involves touching its screen with your fingers. When you need to press part of the screen, such as a button or keyboard, you see a callout with the step number pointing to where you need to press. When you need to drag or slide your finger along the screen, such as to browse lists, you see the following icon:
The directions you can drag are indicated with arrows.
To zoom in or zoom out on screens, you unpinch or pinch, respectively, your fingers on the screen. These motions are indicated by the following icons:
Because iTunes and iPhone work with both Windows computers and Macs, this book is designed for both platforms as well. When there are significant differences, such as applications you use to store photos, you see task sections devoted to each type of computer. You can safely skip over sections focused on a type of computer you don't use.

This book is not that easy to understand. I thumbed through the David Pogue book later and wish I had purchased it instead.

It even has a section on using itunes for those of us unfamiliar with it. The index is very comprehensive and makes it easy to find what you are looking for. I've only had one instance where I couldn't find what I wanted to do(because I didn't know that at this time you can't send a photo in a text msg. on this ph). There are a lot of pictures to accompany the instructions and a lot of side bars with additional info. Easy to read and understand.

I had my iPhone 6 months before buying this book. I had not used any other manual before I bought it. Just through searching a little on Apple's web site and my own experimenting I had already knew much of what was in the book.

"My iPhone" by Brad Miser is a comprehensive, helpful and informative handbook for any iPhone user, no matter your level of mastery. The photos and illustrations, as well as the step-by-step how-tos, are wonderfully easy. This book increased my usage and enjoyment of my iPhone. I highly recommend it to other users!
