Overview

On April 28, 2006, as he lay in his hospital bed in Ann Arbor, Michigan, visions of celestial beauty were the last thing on Marv Besteman's mind. He had just had surgery to remove a rare pancreatic tumor. It was after visiting hours and his family had left for the day. Alone and racked with pain, Marv tossed and turned, wanting more than anything else to simply sleep and escape the misery and discomfort for a while. The retired banker, father, and grandfather had no idea he was about to get a short reprieve in the form of an experience he never could have imagined.

In My Journey to Heaven, Marv Bestman shares the story of his experience of heaven with astounding detail. Readers will hear of his encounters with angels who accompanied him to the gate, his conversation (argument, really) with St. Peter, and his recognition of friends and family members who touched his life. His story offers peace, comfort, and encouragement to those who have lost loved ones and gives security and solace to those who are grieving, dying, or wonder about the afterlife. Marv believed God sent him back to earth to fulfill this mission of comfort and reminds readers that God has work for each of us to do before he calls us to be with him in heaven. Secure in his belief that his book was the fulfillment of his own mission, Marv returned to heaven in January 2012.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Craker coauthored and finalized the manuscript of this posthumously published book by a man who says he was taken to heaven by angels for a brief visit while he was hospitalized for an acute illness. He describes a conversation with St. Peter about whether he could stay or had to return to earth. “‘Marv, I talked to God,’ ” says Peter, “ ‘and God told me to tell you that you had to go back, that he still had work for you to do on earth.’ ” That work, he says, is the goal of the book: to somehow put heaven into words and conclude by asking readers, “Will I see you at the gate?” Witnessing thousands of babies born and unborn, he comforts grieving parents who have lost infants. He also consoles his daughter by relaying that her late husband was one of the six people he sees in heaven, that he is no longer in pain, and is waiting for her. Finally, he claims to have seen God but only from a distance. “I beheld the throne, where our God and his Son are seated and will reign forever.” Besteman takes a reasoned and cautious path that targets the skeptical mind, those wondering if he was only hallucinating or dreaming. For this new entrant on the I-saw-the-afterlife bookshelf, heaven only knows if readers will find his story believable. Agent: Esther Fedorkevich. (Sept.)

I found this book a compelling read...who doesn't want to know what Heaven is like. We have all heard that those who go through the light don't want to come back. Marvin Besteman, a stubborn Dutchman as he calls himself, was just operated on for a pancreatic tumor. He was in such pain the night after the surgery, and all of a sudden he felt himself floating free. No tubes, needles! For months after this experience he doesn't tell anyone. The first person is his wife Ruth, and when she asked him if he had thought of her, he told her no. Was she disappointed? I think what happened was it was all so wonderful, that he didn't have time to think of anyone. What he describes is so very very wonderful, no wonder he didn't want to return. I have recently lost my Husband, this book really touched my heart, and gave me a lot of peace. Marvin describes in detail the babies...lots and lots of them. In all stages of development from a few week old fetus to a full term. I have also lost a 77 day old infant, and to hear that they were all happy and laying on grass ...softer than any blanket. He said he didn't see anyone taking care of them, but knew some how they were all fine. The colors he describes, the gates, the stone walls, and the throne. I could see it all through his eyes. I will pass this book on for others to read, and I'm so glad I was given this opportunity to absorb all that is presented. Of course I wanted more, and would have loved to sit down and speak personally with Marvin, but now it can never by. He did leave again and Saint Peter opened the gate earlier this year. I received this book from the publisher Revell, and was not required to give a positive review.

Marvin J. Besteman and Lorilee Craker in their new book, “My Journey to Heaven” published by Revell gives us Mr. Besteman’s account of seeing Heaven, “What I Saw and How It Changed My Life”. From the Back Cover: An unforgettable trip to the gates of heaven and back As Marv Besteman lay in a hospital bed, visions of celestial beauty were the last thing on his mind. He had just had surgery to remove a rare pancreatic tumor. Alone after visiting hours ended, Marv tossed and turned, wanting more than anything else to simply sleep and escape the excruciating pain and misery for a while. He was about to have an experience he never could have imagined–and could never forget. In My Journey to Heaven, Marv Besteman shares the true story of his experience of heaven with astounding detail. You’ll meet the angels who accompanied him to the gate, overhear his conversation with St. Peter, and feel the joy as he recognizes friends and family members who touched his life. If you are grieving the loss of a loved one, or even if you just wonder about what happens after we die, you’ll find peace, comfort, and encouragement in Marv’s story. There are individuals who believe that Heaven is not a real place that no one is going to when they die. There are others that believe that everyone is going to Heaven when they die. Marvin J. Besteman was there. He saw it. God sent him back to Earth so that he could talk about his experience and then we would know the truth about Heaven. ”My Journey to Heaven” is an eye-opening experience. Mr. Besteman saw angels. He saw Peter. He saw the Heavenly Gates. And he saw the Lamb’s Book of Life. If your name is not written there then you are not getting into Heaven. But Mr. Besteman tells us how we can get our name written on to the Book so there is no need to panic. Mr. Besteman is like a tour guide telling us only about what he saw. There is more to Heaven, he tells us that, it is just that he didn’t get to see it all while he was there. “My Journey to Heaven” is a book that you will want to give to family and friends and, especially to anyone searching for answers to what happens when we die. Mr. Besteman’s story is an important story to share with people grieving the loss of a loved one. “My Journey to Heaven” is a reminder that this world is not the end of our journey, but that it is continued in Heaven, a place of peace and healing and a reuniting with those we love! I have been interested in people's encounters of the afterlife since my father's passing. For days he told us what he was "seeing" before he left us. Over the years, I have read many of these accounts. I will probably remember this one always because of the detail the author offered. Thank you for finishing this book.

In My Journey to Heaven, Marvin Besteman describes his visit to Heaven in 2006. He describes in detail what he saw and experienced there, as well as the people he saw and recognized. Normally, I describe the plot of a book without worrying about having to issue "spoiler alerts", but in this case, I don't really see a way to talk about this book in detail without just retelling his story. So, it comes down to this: some people will believe this book, and others won't. I admit that it challenged my thinking regarding Heaven. Everything he described wasn't exactly the way I've always understood the Bible to mean. However, I tried to keep an open mind while reading. Without giving away too much detail, the one point where I felt that this could be on target was when he described what he saw before the Throne of God. It wasn't the type of thing that a man of his generation and theological background would probably imagine. Whether or not he described Heaven accurately, I feel that he sincerely believed that he saw Heaven, and that it looked just the way he described. This could be very comforting for someone who has lost a loved one. It may not be for everyone, but for anyone who will keep an open mind while reading, it is a wonderful reminder that Heaven is certainly real. 4 stars

Too many times believers are ridiculed and heaven is depicted to be a fictitious place designed to help the ignorant get through life while those with greater sophistication enjoy wineing and dining, They are busy storing up riches and running the world. Now along comes this guy who could sit at the table with any of them and hands us all a big plate of hard boiled truth which helps to strengthen your faith and maybe even kindles a little for those whose faith has dwindled down so low they thought they had lost it. Read it if you dare but be warned, you just might believe it

This book was a kick start to for me to becoming more focused on what God wants me to do in my life instead of what I want to do with the time left in my life. God and his son Jesus wants us to spread the good news of heaven and what it is really like. So, if you are Christ like here on earth then you should'nt have to dwell on what Hell might be like it's as simple as that.

This book was the best that I have read about what happens when we die. I read the whole thing in one night because I just couldn't put it down. I highly suggest anyone either dealing with a loss of a loved one, or just curious as to what happens when we die read this book. Absolutely amazing! Rest easy Marv!

For those looking for a Christian/Bible based near death experience this book is definitely for you. I read books about near death experiences all the time and this is a good one.

Unlike other books I have read about a person's visit to heaven, this one referred to the author's visions of heaven throughout the entire book. Most books i have read have only referenced their visit in a small portion of the book with the rest of the book about the author's life. Obviously the author was led to write this book to fulfill his purpose on earth by God. I have recommended this book to many friends who have lost love ones.i believe it will help them to know that they are in a much better place.

I guess I want to start by saying that people from all beliefs are interested in reading about near death experiences (NDE) from catholics to wiccans to agnostics to spiritual people who do not belong to any particular religion. I fall into the latter category. I like many others do not read the bible, but instead choose a more modern approach to religion. I also do not put as much emphasis on Jesus as typical christians do. I also believe that you don't need to go to church to be spiritually fulfilled. I believe those who have similar beliefs will not like this book. I believe this book is for people who are really, really into the bible as the author quotes the bible more than he discusses his NDE. He also talks quite a bit about worshiping Jesus. If I was really, really into the bible, I would give it 4 stars. For people who do not devote themselves to the bible, like me, skip this book and read another one.

Not sure I believe people can go to heaven and come back. He had an interesting experience and I found it quite odd that he died just as he finished the book. God does work in mysterious ways. Heaven is a real place.
