But Wolfe also employs various instrument combinations, such as the classic jazz quartet with saxophone or the chamber string quartet, especially when the pieces are centered on either one of the two idioms. Although the session features some distinguished soloists -- saxophonist Ned Goold and trombonist Jeff Uusitalo stand out -- this is a collective effort that puts the music first. The jazz segments are inspired by the Duke Ellington and Stan Kenton traditions ...

The jazz segments are inspired by the Duke Ellington and Stan Kenton traditions and veer toward a certain classicism when they do not sound somewhat old-fashioned. There is no denying that Wolfe's compositions are imbued with elegance, resonating with a cinematic quality. The strings betray a more modern approach, sometimes even sounding atonal. When backing the jazz octet, the juxtaposition can be quite intriguing. Despite some reservations, it's encouraging that in our day and age some composers have the opportunity to explore this hybrid concept.
