Favorite Lines:

She was naked! . . . And now she knew why Lia had cut the back of her thigh, Chloe thought frantically, as she tried to twist away from the English nobleman’s hands. Only he held her pinned to his tall frame by one gloved hand tightening on her buttock. She could feel the press of his black satin evening clothes touching her naked skin from her knees to her breasts. All at once he tilted her head back roughly with his fingers on her chin. She whimpered in fear, caught helplessly against the heat of him.

“Who are you so afraid of that you would mar your own beauty so?” he asked harshly, twisting her chin higher.

Take the gag off, Chloe pleaded with her eyes. Take the gag off and I will tell you.

“Do not look at me like that,” he suddenly snarled, and then he released her, backing away. “Brandy-colored doe’s eyes on a venomous bitch!” he hissed.

Chloe watched him abruptly turn away from her and stalk to the chair where he grabbed up a black leather riding quirt from the richly padded seat. She instantly jerked helplessly against the restraints holding her wrists, seeing nothing but the wicked riding quirt as she watched him turn slowly and gracefully toward her once again. He was tapping the quirt along the outside of his muscled thigh.

“Beginning to understand, are we?” The expression on his rugged features was dangerous and lethal and Chloe clenched her eyes with a terrified whimpering sound escaping her throat.

He ought to whip her, Harrison goaded himself. He ought to flay Lia’s round sleek ass red! He ought to make her cry and whimper more. Damnation, why was she doing that whimpering, he thought viciously, as he watched her. Could she play the simpering game this long and not once express any hint of defiance, anger, or lethal revenge in her dark brandy-colored eyes? Not once! Only this fear and this helplessness?

Yes! Yes, she could. Lia was the best, he savagely reminded himself. Lia had fooled Napoleon himself. She was the consummate actress in the guise of an undercover spy. He raised the quirt and watched Lia’s incredibly lovely body shuddering as large crystal teardrops slid down over the red silk gag he had tied over her mouth. He stepped closer and she sobbed, quivering like a helpless frightened doe.

“Damnation,” he swore hoarsely, throwing the quirt across his bedchamber in a violent gesture as he stood straining like a beast against its leash, clenching and unclenching his scarred hands. He dropped his chin looking down at the black leather encasing those hands. Knowing whose fault it was. Damning himself for his . . . this weakness

My review is a mixed review

I gave this book 3 stars partly because I am torn on how to rate this. I purchased this book as it was listed under romance, however once I started reading the book it was immediately clear that this book is more erotic fiction rather than a romance novel in the same listing as Nora Roberts and Johanna Lindsey. I find that misleading. As an erotic story alone I would have given this 4 stars (I will read this author again!), but because I think some readers would purchase this book not realizing it was erotic fiction and not truly "romance" as mainstream romance fans would know it, I had to rate it 3 stars. To me it is like going to a video store and having adult videos mixed in with the blockbusters...an unsuspecting reader might not appreciate the nature of the story, and I feel B&N should classify this book differently. I write both historical romance and erotic stories, so I am not a prudish person, but I fear that a mainstream fan who might happen upon this book looking for a good "old fashioned" romance will be not only shocked, but extremely disappointed...as I said this book was listed in the same list as Nora Roberts and Johanna Lindsey. If you are looking for your "typical" romance novel...this is not it. If I had to compare the pace of the story to anything I might liken it to a bigger budget adult film because there WAS a plot, but the action is hard and fast and not a huge amount of plot development or back story. It was hard to suspend disbelief long enough to believe that our innocent main character, who was terrified enough to faint several times, would melt with desire and become "enslaved" so quickly. The glorified rape aspect might shock some readers. I had a very hard time putting myself in the characters place (something I do often) because her reaction to the chain of events that unfolded around her made little sense, and we (the readers) weren't given enough background information to have them make sense. The story works much better for me when I keep in mind that it is more of a work of erotic fiction...which this book clearly is. It reminded me, in some ways, of the Story of O or of the Beauty trilogy, only it was more "romantic". I found myself rooting for the hero of the tale because I knew deep down that he was a good man and he would be a good man when the story was over. I didn't like the main male characters of O or Beauty at all. As hard as Harrison tried to be callous, he could never quite pull it off because we were treated to glimpses of his better nature, and that kept me from completely disliking him for the way he treated Chloe initially. I think the author missed a great opportunity to really develop Harrison's hatred and quest for revenge and truly give us more of the back story. The same can be said for Chloe...more could have been devoted to really explaining why Lia was so horrid and evil. Sure we were told that and given a few examples, but the tale could have been given a lot more weight with additional details. If you are looking for a "classic" tale of love...this is not it. If you get easily offended by language or certain acts...definitely look elsewhere. If you are a little more open minded and looking for a little gratuitous sex with a feel good ending, this could be for you.

    Had potential, but...

This book had potential with a good storyline between the two main characters. However, I felt like I was in a cloud while reading the book. Usually I can see the story in my head when a good author describes details about the character and the world they are writing. In this book, it was between an quarter to half way through the book before the author even described the heroine. Also, I enjoy a bit of BDSM reading, however it was soooo over the top that she might as well have been a slave, without any opinion, character or personality of her own. I would not recommend this book.

I would say it was worth $2.99

This book is definately for a specific type of reader. To enjoy this book you have to be turned on by some domination. I did like it overall. The book is 285 pages long but only 259 of those are the actually story. The rest are snippits from her other books. I think it was worth $2.99

    It's different, but good.

Upon reading some reviews, I think this is a romance novel and can stand alone even though it is a part of the Archangels series. While reading, I discovered that the some of the sex scenes where much more than what I have become accustomed to reading in romance novels. But, I thought it was good and that it was different. It shows diversity amongst intimacy and romance. You cannot please everyone as an author, but it is good to take into consideration other aspects of lovemaking, sex and romance that may be appealing to others. I think a talented writer is one that can think outside the norm, and can write about a variety of romantic situations. I liked the characters, and the plot. My personal preference in romance is a strong, dark and sensitive male lead especially in hot and juicy love scenes. B&N may have categorized this novel incorrectly, but I can appreciate the different flavor of romance the author has created. In addition, erotic romance has become an evolved reflection of a woman's sexuality. There's certainly nothing wrong with that.

    Good but wow

Story is good. Continuing the series with the next "spy" in the group. Fairly rough sex. It is under the "erotic" category.

    Ok read

Great story line. Just didn't go for the sexual punishment. I think it ruined the story for me. Plus, didn't even need to be in the novel. My opinion.

    It was a romance book

There is nothing about domination in this book. It's a romance book. The plot is nothing new, a few twists here and there, but it felt silly and trite. Save your money.
