Meet the Author

Frank Harris (1856-1931), born in Ireland, became an American citizen in 1921. Harris wrote biographies of Oscar Wilde and Shakespeare. His memoir, My Life and Loves, was notorious for its sexual explicitness. He fought with the government and the postal service over censorship of the book.

    Disappointed

When I was very much younger and in school, this book was essentially verboten by our American culture. So when I came across it as an e-book, I figured "Why not? Let's see what all that excitement and whispering was about! BORING! English gentleman travels the world, screwing every woman and preferably very young girl he can lay hands on and narcissisticaly thinks he's doing them some good. OK, a "libertine" I guess is the word. Not particularly shocking, but his bedding very young girls (and I don't care that it might be "their" culture to be OK with it, it was not his) is kind of queasy making. Maybe I am too vanilla in my tastes! I am no prude and enjoy sexy writing, even well-written porn.. This isn't even good porn! Mind you am not in favor of censorship. It just is not worth the time.
