My Life, Deleted: A Memoir

( 32 )

Overview

Scott Bolzan went to work on December 17, 2008, like any other Wednesday. By that afternoon, he'd lost every memory of his past.

Awakening in a hospital with no memory of who he was or how he got there, the forty-six-year-old didn’t know that the petite blonde at his side was his wife of twenty-four years, Joan—or even what a wife was. He couldn’t remember the births of his two young-adult children, the daughter he’d lost, his time as an ...

He couldn’t remember the births of his two young-adult children, the daughter he’d lost, his time as an offensive lineman for the NFL’s Cleveland Browns, or his flourishing aviation career.

Scott’s life and the lives of everyone who loved him were forever changed when he slipped, hit his head, and lost consciousness in his office bathroom, suffering one of the most severe cases of permanent retrograde amnesia on record. With heartrending honesty and no shortage of humor, the Bolzans share their remarkable journey as Scott navigates his way through a now-unfamiliar world. The challenges are initially overwhelming: Scott’s debilitating headaches, his relearning of social etiquette (taking cues from The Sopranos!), Joan’s grief over the loss of the man she married and their shared history, the financial burden of Scott’s lost income, his mounting medical bills, and the agony of their twenty-year-old son’s struggles with drug addiction.

But remarkably, My Life, Deleted is above all else a celebration of extraordinary perseverance, and of the enduring love that emerges when we are most tested. Scott learns to trust his intuition in a way few people ever will, while Joan taps into a well of patience and resourcefulness she didn’t know she had. Throughout it all, what unfolds—against all odds—is an enviable romance as Scott and Joan fall in love all over again.

Both gut-wrenching and brimming with optimism, the Bolzans’ captivating story makes a powerful statement about commitment—and the possibility of finding extraordinary opportunity in life’s greatest challenges.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Bolzan, who briefly played with the Cleveland Browns, tries to make sense of his life when, after an accidental slip, he suffered memory loss. His fluke brain injury meant that everything he knew about his previous 46 years was wiped clean, and he was left with unbearable headaches, a family he didn't know, a job he couldn't do, and more questions than a toddler. Writing with the help of his wife, Joan, and journalist-novelist Rother, this memoir perfectly captures Bolzan's desperation and confusion. Even as the writers do a good job keeping up the suspense as to whether Bolzan's memory will ever come back, the up-and-down relationship between husband and wife, who must find out if they can fall in love all over again while also trying to figure out how to pay the bills and handle their son's heroin addiction, is the emotional glue that holds this work together. What the book lacks is Joan's perspective on what it's like to be with a man who didn't remember marrying her. (Oct.)

    Highly recommended

Extremely good read. Scott's ordeal was and is scary - to think your life can just disappear in one second and to learn, eventually, that your memory may never come back. Scott's wife's dedication and devotion was unwavering. Many lessons learned here - medical, family devotion, individual, friends.

    very good

when I started reading it I found the author kind of too much descriptive about his material posessions but when I continued reading it I discovered it was just to point how much his injury has changed him even about his "material posessions", very nice and very well written. Inspiring good feelings!!!. Regarding nookbook it has a "bug" on pages 229 to 237 when you get to this page (229) it looks like some other pages are missing, and then the only way you have to stop the "loop" of going back and forth to the same 229 page is changing chapters by the bottom menu..it could be fixed!!!

The best part of this book was when it was over!

This entire book just kept repeating itself. I saw it as a "brag book" about how big his house was, how many cars he had, how much he could sell his yacht for, and how much money he made.
    NOT recommended!

    worth the read!

A fascinating story - much credit to author for doing this; at the end, it does get overlong rehashing some events.

    Interesting read

I heard Scott and his wife interviewed on a Chicago radio station and decided to buy the Nook book that day. One week later I finished the book. A relatively easy read and unbelievable story. Scott's story is very unique and thoughtprovolking. I would recommend it.
