Overview

Twelve-year-old Lucy Desberg is a natural problem-solver. At her family’s struggling pharmacy, she has a line of makeover customers for every school dance and bat mitzvah. But all the makeup tips in the world won’t help save the business. If only she could find a way to make it the center of town again—a place where people want to spend time, like in the old days. Lucy dreams up a solution that could resuscitate the family business and help the environment, too. But will Lucy’s family stop fighting long enough to listen to a seventh-grader?

In a starred review, Kirkus said this novel “successfully delivers an authentic and endearing portrait of the not-quite-teen experience,” and Booklist called it “a warm, uplifting debut.” Readers everywhere have responded to Lucy’s independence and initiative—not to mention her great style.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Displaying a lively familiarity with the topics of makeup, makeovers and adolescent angst, Greenwald makes a bright debut with this timely story. Prospects look grim for the Old Mill Pharmacy run by 12-year-old Lucy's mother and grandmother. In order to drum up more sales, Lucy decides to offer customers beauty tips and free makeup applications. Although her efforts prove somewhat fruitful, her best idea comes after she joins her school's earth club: what if they add an eco-spa to the pharmacy? Like the recent Teashop Girls, also about an enterprising preteen trying to save a family business, this novel takes an upbeat approach to serious issues-money struggles and impending foreclosure-underscoring the optimistic message that one individual can make a difference. Ages 10-14. (Mar.)

Gr 4-6

Lucy Desberg, 12, spends most of her free time at her family's pharmacy. It was once a popular hangout for fountain treats in their small Connecticut town, but the emergence of a large chain store has put the pharmacy in danger of foreclosure. Lucy overhears her practical grandmother and somewhat disengaged, eco-activist mom arguing about what to do, and she is determined to come up with a solution. When the high school's Homecoming queen rushes in sporting a hair disaster on the day of the big dance, Lucy bravely suggests how to fix the problem. A star is born when the products she suggests work, word spreads of Lucy's talents, and more and more young women seek her advice. Meanwhile, she and her older sister apply for a grant to be awarded by the mayor to locally owned businesses that are "going green." Greenwald has created a smart, spunky heroine with ingenuity and budding femininity. A natural beauty or business tip introduces each chapter. These helpful hints are age appropriate and environmentally current. Readers will enjoy the realistic portrayal of middle school friendships, crushes, and coming-of-age beauty concerns.-D. Kirkus Reviews
When 12-year old Lucy learns the family pharmacy might close, she decides to attract customers using her preternatural knowledge of make-up application and products. When not giving the homecoming queen lip-gloss advice and booking appointments, Lucy helps her best friend Sunny deal with the many mini-mortifications of a first crush. The squeals, giggles and tiffs between these best buds teetering on adolescence allow readers a glimpse of true tweendom. Boys still seem mysterious, like aliens, and to Lucy they remain more annoying than infatuating. Preteens will enjoy Lucy's sweet first-person narrative, a disarming combination of innocence and earnestness. She feels sick of adults patronizing her and treating her like a little kid, particularly her flaky mom and no-nonsense grandma. A Going Green grant for local businesses seems a perfect way to make the pharmacy relevant again and prove that she should be taken seriously. Greenwald clearly takes preteens seriously, emphasizing their ardent concern for the environment and desire for change. This refreshing novel successfully delivers an authentic and endearing portrait of the not-quite-teen experience. (Fiction. 9-13)

    I Couldn't Stop!

I read this book and I absolutely loved it! Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down! I just kept on reading. People who liked this book might also like Lisa Greenwalds Sweet Treats and Secret Crushes. (I also read this and loved it)!!!

Reviewed by Sally Kruger aka "Readingjunky" for TeensReadToo.com

Lisa Greenwald has a nice combination of things going on in her debut novel MY LIFE IN PINK & GREEN. Put together "green" living to save the earth, the trials and tribulations of being a 7th-grade girl, and the financial stress of running a family business, and you have a real page-turner.

Lucy will be the third generation owner of a family pharmacy - that is if her mother and grandmother can keep the store going against the competition of large chains and consumers only looking for one-stop shopping options. She hears their constant arguments about which direction is best for the business her grandfather started years ago.

Lucy's mother's objections are that the store is stuck in the 80's, while her mother, Lucy's grandmother, says her own daughter is the downfall of the business because of her poor money management skills. All Lucy knows is that she doesn't want to lose the family business, and she thinks she just might have the answer.

Being a 7th-grader is also a challenge for Lucy. Her older sister is away at college, but thanks to Claudia, at least Lucy knows how to look her best, and with the help of good grooming she maintains a high level of self-confidence in the face of middle school stress. She has always been interested in make-up, and growing up in the pharmacy with its make-up aisle so easily accessible, she has developed a certain knack for making people look their best.

When people begin realizing her talent, she finds herself running a makeover business that is bringing in needed cash for the store.

In an effort to boost her friend Sunny's confidence with boys, Lucy joins the school's Earth Club. Membership in the club revives Lucy's interest in recycling and promoting some of the more nature-friendly make-up products she uses with her customers. When an afternoon of research for the club causes Lucy to stumble across a city grant offering some major money help for local businesses who "go green," she believes she has truly found the way to save the family business.

MY LIFE IN PINK & GREEN grabbed my attention right from the start. Lucy is portrayed as a fun, upbeat 7th-grader not afraid to test out her innovative ideas. The addition of the financial stress in the family business brings this story into the here and now of our economic woes and will help hold the interest of readers dealing with their own tough times. By adding humor and a bit of young romance, Lisa Greenwald has really hit the mark with this novel.

I look forward to reading what I hope will be a long line of her YA work.

    Entertaining and delightful

This book will be a great read for any tween who wants something uplifting and also shows great problem solving and drive. Lucy is just a 7th grader and pretty much under the radar as far as the popular girls are concerned at her middle school. Secretly Lucy is a budding makeup artist, and she wants to grow up and become the next Laura Mercier. When a chance meeting between her and the popular homecoming queen at school leads to Lucy helping correct a terrible hairdo and makeup tips, she starts to become known as the go-to beauty girl of the town. Throw in drama at home with the family pharmacy having trouble and the very real threat of having to sell off everything, Lucy does something amazing. She starts a campaign to help save the place and maybe save her little corner of Connecticut. Spurred by the popular queen's makeover, many of the popular girls all come to Lucy to get made over for parties and graduation. She even helps get the pharmacy 'green' and help become more eco-friendly.
I like how there are little makeup and appearance tips at the chapter starts and I really like how the book really makes you feel empowered to go out and do something for the environment.
Tweens will like the characters and everyone is very believable and the middle school social drama is relatable too. Girls will like Lucy and her message is one of wanting to spread the news of being more green, but also that beauty is not all makeup...its about being confident and thats the beauty that counts.

This book is a great and fast-paced

I read this book when I was on vacation. It was a unique plot that wasn't written like any other books. This books shows struggle in a family like most american families in the same situation. I recommend this book to seventh graders like me. I think this because its about a seventh graders. Also, it would be a easy read for a 8 grader, and a sixth graders don't wear makeup, and date boys......I'm not saying a sixth grader wouldn't enjoy it though.......

My Life in Pink and Green

My Life in Pink and Green is the book for you if you like. make-up, and business tips, and going green! Want to know something cool? Lauren Myracle the author of TTLY gave us the make-up, and business tips! The author of this dazzling book is Lisa Greenwald. The fabulous art work is done by Chad W. Beckerman. In every chapter of this book there is either a make-up or business tip that makes you want to read over and over again!
Lucy Desberg is a girl with a heart of gold! She has been through a lot of challenges. Here's how they started. Her grandfather opened up a drug store when Lucy was 5 years old. The drug store, which is called today Old Mill Pharmacy. Old Mill Pharmacy is not any old pharmacy. At the store you can go and buy a soda, but at Old Mill Pharmacy you can buy a milkshake while you are waiting for your prescription. Doesn't that sound cool? I want to do that! Well, now that Lucy is 11 years old and her grandfather died, the store is going bankrupt. One reason is that Lucy mom gives away almost everything in the store. But lucky Lucy comes up with multiple solutions. One solution is that Lucy starts her own business. Her business is doing make-up for people's birthday, for their prom, and just to look good! All the money Lucy makes goes to the store! I'm not going to tell you everything you will have to read the book!
Just like in my life one time hosted a lemonade sale. I had $59.99 for ice cream. So we went to Rita's ice cream. It was yummy!!!
Here are some cool-cat facts about Mrs. Lisa Greenwald!!! Mrs. Greenwald works in a library at the Birch Wathen Lexon School on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. She also is a graduate of the new School's MFA program in writing for children. Some of Lisa's other books are Sweet treats and Secret Crushes also available in November 2010.
I recommend this book because who doesn't want a healthier earth? Well this book has those tips!!! Please read this book you will love it, I did and I'm very picky about the books I read!!!

    Really good Book

This is a really good book. It is all about makeup and it makes me want to be good with make-up. The town that her pharmacy is in also reminds me of the town in the book I'd Tell you I Love you, But then I'd have to kill you. Let me know what you think.

    Can't wait to finish it!!!!

This book is probably one of the best books I've ever read. It's good for girls that are about ages 11-13 because it talks about how to use makeup the right way, which is part of growing up for girls. The main character is also about 12, so girls can relate to her problems. I never want to put it down!

I enjoyed reading this book so much! I put 5 stars for a lot of things, including sharing with friends because I have a group of friends and we all love to read the same books and then get together and talk about our favorite parts of the book, our least favorite character, all that stuff! Anyway we found this the perfect book to talk about and hope to see more books written by this author!
