Wrapped in Foil Blog

High-quality book . . . and you can feel the caliber starting with [it's] well-crafted covers. . . . Written for the beginning readers, with large illustrations full of color and texture. This book would be great to accompany a trip to the zoo or a unit on life cycles.

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
An emperor penguin tells its life story beginning as an egg that its mother catches at her feet. The mom transfers the egg to the dad's feet while she goes on a long trek to a feeding ground in the sea. The emperor penguin tells how it eventually hatches and becomes big enough to leave their protection. It goes for its first swim and learns to escape from leopard seals. After four years, the penguins return to the place where they were hatched. A beautiful illustration shows the emperor penguin when it meets another penguin and their beaks touch. Another life cycle begins when the emperor's partner lays an egg. A "Did You Know?" section of four pages contains paragraphs and pictures with additional information about such facts as how the adult penguins protect the chicks from seabirds and how each penguin makes its own unique sound. A "Meet the Penguin Family" section contains pictures and names of different kinds of penguins. There is a quiz consisting of eight questions with the answers given upside-down. Statistics list more facts and a map shows where the penguins live. A short glossary is included. Large fantastic illustrations help make this text an excellent educational resource. Young readers could read the simple narrative, and adults could use the additional factual material to extend the learning experience. Reviewer: Vicki Foote

Gr 2–4—A handsome pair of first-person critter "autobiographies" depict the life cycles of these two animals. Personal in their stories, the texts present a lively look at the creatures from birth to parenthood. Each book is chock-full of large, realistic illustrations that keep pace with the simple narratives. "Did You Know?" sections add further data on cheetah/penguin lifestyles and behaviors, and each title has a section introducing other members of the cat/penguin family. Focusing on popular animals, these eye-catching and approachable volumes will appeal to children reading on their own, to classroom teachers, and to homeschoolers.—Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY
