Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jackie Hechtkopf
Third in a series, this book contains eighteen craft projects based on information in the classic pioneer stories by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Each craft is introduced by a quote from one of the nine "Little House" books as well as a short explanation of the item and the role it played in pioneer life. The directions and the illustrations are attractively presented within intriguing, theme-related borders. Six of the eighteen crafts require needlework and/or embroidery skills. One involves gardening and another includes making bread from scratch. Only a few are simple enough for first graders. Most of the activities are for elementary or middle school students and most require adult help. Teachers and Girl Scout leaders will find this book a good source of ideas. The projects are presented in such an inviting fashion that readers could be inspired to learn sewing or embroidery. The numerous references to all of the "Little House" books should also pique the interest of those who have not read the entire series. All in all, this is a useful and attractive book.
