Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Before going to the ball, a princess must pack her purse. The princess's first-person narrative invites readers to play along by removing cardboard objects, then placing them into Velcro or ribbon-tied pouches. First, her quill pen (the "ink" can be tested on an erasable slate); next, her rose-tinted cat-eye sunglasses and fan, scratch-and-sniff perfume bottles, rings, and tiara. A final surprise encourages modeling the princess's attire, while recurring requests to count shapes on each spread yield yet another interactive level. Ages 4–8. (Oct.)
Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich
This is a very large and cumbersome book (three and a half pounds) that contains seven illustrations of elaborate evening purses. All but the pink purse on the cover can be opened to add or retrieve something from inside. On the inside pages, opposite the purses, an interesting assortment of cardboard purse accessories can be pulled from the heavy cardboard pages. The very first purse contains an invitation to attend "the Royal Springtime Ball, which will begin promptly at three o'clock in the afternoon this Saturday. It will be held in the flowering Royal Gardens." The next purse is yellow with a large purple gemstone, and on the opposite page there is a large cardboard feather pen, which will write on the built-in pad inside the yellow purse. A clear plastic sheet can be raised to remove the writing. Other purse fillers are four bottles of scratch-and-sniff perfume, five thick cardboard rings and a cardboard diamond bracelet, a pair of sunglasses and a fan, a tiara and a golden key. There is a hitch to all of these treasures however. Most of the heavy cardboard playthings will have to be helped out of the book with a screwdriver. Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich

    My Little Pink Princess Purse

What could be more exciting for a Princess than to receive an invitation to the Springtime Ball from the King and Queen! The invitation specifically reminds the Princess to bring her purse and to wear her dancing shoes. So starts My Little Pink Princess Purse by Stephen T. Johnson, with ages 4 - 8 being the targeted market. The book is compiled of 16 thick brightly colored pages easy for small hands to turn and hold. The story line is based on everything a young Princess needs to place into her purse for the Springtime Ball. Each page contains information about an item(s) to include in the purse along with why it is necessary for the ball. After the items explanation the book becomes interactive for the child is to locate the specific item on the page and match it to its corresponding space in the purse, similar to placing puzzle pieces in a puzzle. The individual pieces are thick and sturdy reminding me of wooden puzzle pieces. Not all of the items are merely placed into the purse; several of the items can be worn and used by the Princess before she places them inside her purse. The fan, glasses, tiara, mirror, scratch and sniff perfume bottles are interactive items that will ignite the princess's imagination long after her purse has been packed. Additionally the book offers the challenge of uncovering shapes hidden among the items placed into the purse. This book encompasses the senses of sight, smell, feeling, and hearing along with the skill of shape and color identification and imagination. Most importantly of all though is the gift from the Princesses Fairy Godmother, which is an item of great beauty and wisdom, an item that no purse would be complete without ; the aspect of self confidence.

Best Little Girl Gift Book, Ever!

This is the kind of book which is both a rare combination of intricate art book wrapped around a big, fat box of super-cool, girly fun. Best of all, it's a children's book as meaningful as it is fun to play with. (Over and over.) It also contains a mystery/game found inside the book which includes a personal message from the reader's Special Fairy Godmother (Major female impowerment message in it, as well! Hello? My parter and I loved that!)
And the best part is that it's so P-R-E-T-T-Y! Your girls are going to carry this around with them everywhere. To dinners, when you want to talk and they want to quietly play. This is the book that will make memories for both the giver and the child. And, best of all, the book's art and the fun dress up items are gorgeous! This is one of those books you'll never get quite be able to pry out of your kids's hands.

Trust me: I'm 5 birthday parties into giving this as my only birthday present and I've never had such grateful thank you letters from my mommy pals saying this was the one book from their trip/ wedding/ event that kept their little girl busy and happy. And also made her a better person for it.

    K. W.
