Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Meagan Albright
Emergent literacy is a popular topic in children's literature today, and the demand for books and series that will help children learn to read has led to a wealth of new material specializing in phonics. My Little Pony: Phonics Fun is a series of twelve short books that focus on introducing the short vowel sounds a, e, i, o and u. The accompanying letter to parents explains that, in order to learn how to read, children must be motivated, and that choosing books with your children's favorite characters will help motivate children to read these books, first with parental assistance and eventually on their own. The plots of the books may not hold up to repeated reading—the focus, after all, is on phonological development rather than a solid storyline—but the bright pink books with colorful ponies are sure to appeal to young readers. This series would be a good purchase for libraries and individuals looking to expand their collection; however Curious George: Curious about Phonics may be a better choice, since the parent's guide to phonological development with that book is more explicit, detailed, and easier to follow. My Little Pony Phonics Fun

I have now bought this set of books twice in two years! First for my four year old and now for my 2 1/2 year old. It did not take them long and they were reading them back to us. Bright and colorful and they have all of the ponies in the stories. Great buy!

My daughter is in Preschool and learning sight words, these books made it fun for her to learn them, since she loves My Little Pony.

Names of the Ponies are very hard for beginning readers

My just turned 6-yr-old begged for this and loves reading it. However, she gets extremely frustrated when it comes to reading the names of the ponies. They're cute but nonsensical and super long and, therefore, hard for her to figure out. Otherwise, she loves these books.

Good books to read but not for phonics

This set of books is supposed to be for the early reader. My daughter can read some words and sound out short words but the names of the ponies are too hard for a beginning reader to sound out. She still loves the stories and can read the other words but gets frustrated that she can't read the names of the ponies. Since a lot of them are similar she can't always remember their names either. This might not be a big deal for some children but she prefers books she can read all by herself.
However, these are good books to read out loud and for sight word reinforcement.
