Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
Billy says he has two families. The first is his mom, his dad, and himself. The second is comprised of his "firehouse uncles" who are his mother's co-workers at the Floral Avenue firehouse. Through Billy, readers are introduced to the fire station, what firefighters do to put out a fire and ensure the safety of the people and the site, and the tasks that need to be done when the firefighters return from a fire, such as cleaning the air masks, washing and rolling the hoses, and scrubbing the tools. His mother goes to his school and talks about fire safety. Just like a family, the firefighters gather together for dinner at the end of the day. Because they are busy putting out a fire, Billy is making dinner for them today. There is a lot of information packed into this story. Readers will sense the camaraderie of the firefighters and Billy's pride in his mother. Billy's first person narration sets the tone for the story. The cartoon illustrations work well with the tone and show scenes inside and outside the firehouse, show the equipment, and the firefighters putting out a blaze. This is ideal for preschool and primary grade units on fire safety and careers. Keep it in mind for a story time about mothers and for those young people who want a book about firefighters.
