Sally Harrison and her family are slaves on a plantation in Georgia. But when Master decides to sell Sally and her brother, the family escapes to seek shelter with a tribe of Seminoles who are rumored to adopt runaway slaves. After a perilous journey, Sally's family finds and joins the tribe. But while her father and brother easily adjust to Indian ways, Sally can't seem to find her place. Combining the poetry of Sally's songs with the heartracing tension of the family's escape, author Brenda Woods delivers a breathtaking story of a girl caught between worlds.

Born on a plantation in Georgia, Sally May is eleven when her father finds out that she and her older brother Abraham are to be sold. Determined to keep his family intact, her father decides they will escape south to the swamps of northern Florida where Seminole Indians are reported to be willing to shelter runaway slaves. The family is nearly successful in their escape; on the very last day Sally's mother is attacked by an alligator and dies of her injuries. After being welcomed into the Seminole village, Sally must come to terms with the loss of both her mother and her own sense of self as she is faced with the need to assimilate into the Seminole tribe. The violence of plantation life is presented with honesty, but never so graphically as to make this book inappropriate for its intended upper grade school audience. The dialogue is largely written in dialect, adding authenticity. The action is fast paced. Each short chapter begins with a brief poem, one of the songs Sally likes to make up as she works. This book offers a fairly unique perspective about escape from slavery since it deals with traveling south instead of north.

Gr 4-6-When Pa learns that Master plans to sell five slaves, including his children, he and Mama flee into the night with Sally and Abraham. Following Joshua's star, named by Sally for the slave who alerted them to Master's plan, the family trades cotton picking for alligators, and runs from slave hunters and heartbreak before arriving in Seminole land. Woods precedes each chapter with poignant rhyming verse, presumably the songs that Sally has dreamed up to help her "keep her mind." Based on historical accounts, this novel provides readers with an alternative view of the realities of slavery-an escape to the South rather than North. Woods deftly teases out both the light and the dark moments of the experience, as seen in Sally's realization that she will never be entirely free from fear whether she is known by the last name Henderson or Little Song.     Amazing!!!

    Wonderful! Everything I look for in a book. With happy, heartbreaking, and heartstopping moments. Always a new turn of events. Kept me engaged and absorbed throughout the entire story. Teaches many good lessons and morals. I would definitely reread this book many times. A real treasure.
