Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Muted watercolors capture every nuance of the joy that is felt by this grandmother and her granddaughter. The intimate and celebratory moments of their day together are chronicled in a text that is as sweet and loving as the pair. Tea parties, combing and braiding Nana's hair, Eskimo kisses, bath time giggles, and quiet bedtime reading are the simple joys that cement the bond that will last a lifetime. The warmth and joy of this intergenerational relationship are captured in the expressive watercolor paintings rendered in soft hues. This is a beautiful and tender book just begging to be shared. 2005, Little Brown, Ages 3 to 6.
—Beverley Fahey
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-As she did in Jonathan and His Mommy (1992) and Kevin and His Dad (1999, both Little, Brown), Smalls once again focuses on family relationships. In this charming picture book, an African-American girl tells readers about a special day that she shares with her grandmother. From a tea party and pat-a-cake to bath and bedtime, the routine activities will be widely recognized and celebrated for their simple pleasures. The child's voice allows the story to take on the rhythm of poetry. Several lines in particular recall many grandchild/grandparent relationships: "I am the smartest girl in the world/I know because my Nana told me so," and "Nana calls me her baby girl, but I'm/not a baby, I'm big." The affection between the two is reinforced by the golden-hued background and the watercolor illustrations of the smiling pair as they spend time together. The text adds to the playful spirit of the story by dancing across the pages and changing font style to emphasize certain words. A "sweetening" title that should win lots of smiles.-Maura Bresnahan, High Plain Elementary School, Andover, MA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
A day of small adventures for a pre-school girl and her grandmother. Warm watercolor illustrations accompany the lean and straightforward narrative, in which the young African-American heroine describes a series of games and activities. As the day progresses, the background changes from gold and orange to green to a lavender sky dotted with stars. Similarly, a tea party gives way to dress-up and dancing, hair-braiding and a bath. Almost every page of the text has one line written in snaking cursive ("story after story after story"); it's easy to imagine this as a call-and-response between reader and listener. The opening page features a spot for the young reader to affix a picture of herself and her Nana. A loving tribute with effective images and broad appeal. (Picture book. 2-6)

    Great Book

I don't have much to say, but that I have a 1 year old son who adores his Nana and who also adores this book. At storey time when I ask him to get a book My Nana and Me is what he gets and he usually wants me to read it at least two times before nap or bed time. This is just an all around great book, written content and illustration.
