Hike a trail, climb a tree! Smell the flowers, watch the birds! Explore the world!

Nature is full of adventures, but sometimes it’s easy to forget things you felt or saw. What did those animal tracks look like? How did you feel when you gazed at the starry sky on a calm, clear night?

My Nature Book is the perfect place for a child to keep track of all of his or her memories. It’s a place to draw and write about your experiences with nature, so you’ll remember the sound of the squirrel you heard chattering, the color of the bird that landed on your lunch sack, or the way the meadow grasses waved goodbye. My Nature Book is also full of projects and ideas, such as how to make water windows and luminarias, and even how to make yummy peanut butter cookies or banana bread or muffins to take along on hiking trips. There are also lined pages for writing, blank pages for drawing, and numerous activity pages.

Editorial Reviews

Paul Larson
A carefully crafted, beautifully produced journal for actively engaging children in the natural world. Children only need a nudge to notice and question things adults have come to take for granted, and this little activity-filled book hits just the right buttons: curiosity, finely tuned observation, and hands-on experience. Put the book in their hands, and take them outside!
Publishers Weekly
New nonfiction interactive and picture books tap into kids' curiosities about their world. My Nature Book: A Journal and Activity Book for Kids by Linda Kranz opens with "Tips for Journal Writers" then suggests numerous activities (including recipes and crafts) and thought-provoking questions to engage children's imaginations. Colorful text and spot illustrations brighten the pages, which leave plenty of room for written and artistic exercises. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

Trees, bugs, birds, sunsets, stars, flowers and mountains are all part of nature's beauty. Helping a child think about nature and what it means to our world is a worthy goal. In this attractive journal, the author strives to get children to reflect on and appreciate the nature around us. Some pages offer questions for children to answer. For example, "What type of weather extremes have you experienced?" The hottest temperature?, the coldest?, the most rain?, the most snow?, etc. Some pages suggest projects, such as a trail mix recipe to enjoy while hiking, or a rock collection and a nature box. There are pages for recording and drawing whatever the reader wishes. An introduction offers tips for journal writers, such as putting dates on entries and describing sounds and smells as well as feelings. The font, print size and print color varies, depending on the page. Illustrations are sometimes big and sometimes small, but always enhance the text. There is a full-page of sunflowers, bright butterflies against a blue sky, and the night sky over the desert. And there are small ladybugs, humming birds, Tiger lilies, raccoons and geometric designs. The book will generate an amazing array of thoughts and feelings about the natural world. It is likely to spark conversations with parents, peers and teachers on the topic. This journal also offers children the ability to create a snapshot in time—they can return again and again to read and reflect on the things they wrote during or after a specific nature encounter. 2004, Northword Books for Young Readers, Ages 8 to 12.

Fantastic Author and A Great Nature Journal

MY NATURE BOOK: A JOURNAL AND ACTIVITY BOOK FOR KIDS Fantastic Author and A Great Nature Journal By Jerry Flack, Professor Emeritus, University of Colorado and children¿s literature consultant, Denver, CO. In a short time span Linda Kranz has become the master creator of journals. Kranz has created a minimum of seven journals for such diverse groups as young students (ALL ABOUT ME: A KEEPSAKE JOURNAL FOR KIDS), teenagers (THROUGH MY EYES: A JOURNAL FOR TEENS) as well as exceptionally fine journals for both mothers and fathers to create and later share with their children. Now, the very imaginative Kranz has branched out into subject matter disciplines with her newest journal, MY NATURE BOOK: A JOURNAL AND ACTIVITY BOOK FOR KIDS (NorthWord Press, 2004). MY NATURE BOOK: A JOURNAL AND ACTIVITY BOOK FOR KIDS opens with an excellent example of a nature-based journal entry penned by Kranz after a weekend family trip into the wild. Next, she provides useful hints (but never stifling restrictions) on how to best create a nature journal. Some of her hints include always dating journal entries and describing sounds and smells as well as things seen. Kranz utilizes what she refers to as ¿thought starters¿ to help young naturalists begin writing in their journals. One example of such a prompt is to write about firsts: first fish caught, first climbing of a tree, and the first swim in a lake. Excellent quotations are also utilized as inspirations for journal writing. One such example is Dorothy Thomson¿s lovely verse, ¿I am inclined to think that the flowers we most love are those we knew when were very young.¿ Nature facts also are intended to inspire writing. For example, Kranz provides fascinating information on such creatures as the hummingbird, namely that it lays the smallest eggs of any bird and consumes half its weight in sugar every day! MY NATURE BOOK contains more than journal prompts, however. It is also filled with fun, stimulating, and delicious activities. The author gives directions for creating an imaginative Nature Box plus a recipe for banana bread muffins and bread so that no naturalists will go hungry on an excursion into the woods. The full-color illustrations by Linda Garrow and John F. McGee are extremely vibrant and most fitting for a nature journal. They are extremely appealing and will draw young writers quickly into the joy of this extraordinary journal. Parents, grandparents, and aunts and uncles seeking the perfect gift for beloved younger family member need look no further. MY NATURE BOOK: A JOURNAL AND ACTIVITY BOOK FOR KIDS is the perfect send off gift for any child venturing off on a nature expedition. Enjoy!
