Overview

Dealing with the arrival of a new baby in the family

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The wait and then eventual arrival of a new sibling can be traumatic. In this "New Baby" series, the focus is on positive responses and active involvement of an older sibling. The new baby has arrived, but all he seems to do is nurse, poop, and sleep. The young girl shows that she is more grown up and that she can get dressed herself, eat a variety of foods (nice to see fruits and a sandwich on her plate). When the baby gets a present, the really smart and caring friends and family bring one for the older girl too. While she can walk, the baby travels in a snuggie. Our little protagonist helps with the baby's bath and shows that she can use the potty because she has gone beyond diapers. Once baby is fast asleep it is time for her parents to spend special moments reading a story or quietly playing with the older child before bedtime. The goal is to encourage interaction and to help young ones understand the changes that will be occurring in their lives and those of their parents. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
Publishers Weekly
A toddler observes and asks questions about the new baby in this story, part of a series designed to help new siblings adjust. “Why does the baby always have milk?” the toddler wonders as her mother breastfeeds. The child’s constant smiles, even when things get a little rough (“Why is Baby crying? Can we make it stop?”), and the cozy family home are in keeping with the book’s positive focus. Also available: Waiting for Baby, You and Me, and Look at Me! Up to age 3. (Feb.)
School Library Journal
PreS—These four books are just right for toddlers awaiting and adjusting to the birth of a new sibling. They cover pregnancy, welcoming the baby, and learning to play and live together. One toddler visits the doctor with a pregnant mother. Another sibling "helps" feed the baby and learns to enjoy mom's attention while the infant is asleep. The multiracial families are always smiling and gentle. Colorful artwork fills each page. The writing is clear, conversational, and full of common situations. In reaction to having her hair pulled, big sister says, "Ouch! Don't do that! Why is baby laughing?" Older kids will prefer the sparkle and humor of Jonathan Shipton's Baby Baby Blah Blah Blah! (Holiday House, 2009), Barney Saltzberg's Cornelius P. Mud, Are You Ready for Baby? (Candlewick, 2005), or Emma Chichester Clark's No More Kissing! (Doubleday, 2002), but Fuller's books speak to the very young.—Amelia Jenkins, Juneau Public Library, AK

Highly Recommended - you must check it out especially if you have a new baby coming home soon!!

I got this book at the library for my 2 year old grandson just before his baby brother was born. there are no words but lots of pictures and lots of family members--we gave the family members names of our own family members and he really liked that! you can make up your own story about the family, feeding the baby, being gentle, being quiet and being loved! Great board book! Loved it so much that I had to buy it!

Highly Recommended for very young children

We bought this book for our 17 month old son, who will be 22 months old when his little brother is born. This is a great new baby book for this age group. My son chooses this book regularly, and wants us to read it over and over again. The simple text and bright illustrations are a great introduction to the idea that the family structure will be changing. I love that this book shows several illustrations where the new baby is at the breast. It helps that I look like the mom in the book! We use the pictures in the book to talk about our own family, and we call the child in the book (who is probably meant to be a little girl) by my son's name. We ask our son to point to each member of our family. At first, when we asked him to point to himself in the picture, he would point to the new baby. But now he identifies with the older child. This kind of basic understanding is just what I was hoping for.
