All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Melody Gardot's 2006 debut, Worrisome Heart, was greeted with warmly enthusiastic reviews that never failed to mention Gardot's musical similarities to Norah Jones and Madeleine Peyroux, or her sadly compelling story of surviving a severe hit-and-run accident at the age of 19. The tragedy gave critics an irresistible hook, and the musical similarities -- which also include her vocal resemblance to Fiona Apple's smoky tones -- gave new listeners a familiar touchstone, but both merely provided an entry into a fine, accomplished debut. Released three years later, Gardot's second album, My One and Only Thrill, proves that the first was no fluke; it doesn't build upon the debut so much as it sustains its quality. Like before, My One and Only Thrill is built primarily on Gardot originals (a fine version of "Over the Rainbow" that closes the album being the only exception) that seamlessly blend sultry, late-night jazz blues, singer/songwriter introspection, and sophisticated pop melodies. If anything, My One and Only Thrill emphasizes Gardot's chanteuse qualities, feeling like more of a jazz album than its predecessor, thanks both to its languid atmosphere and also Gardot's phrasing, which elegantly elongates her melodies and slips into scat. These are slight, subtle progressions but what impresses is how thoroughly My One and Only Thrill lives up to the promise of her debut, offering another album that is as enchanting in its sound as it is in its substance.

    Fantastic

This is a fantastic CD, love the music, love her voice. Very enjoyable. Say her on Dateline or one of those shows and how she came to be singer and what she's gone through. Great person and will buy her other CD's.

    Future Standards! Fantastic

I listened to the entire CD 3 times in one day, I liked it so much. The lyrics are catchy, and the musical arrangements are thoughtful and fun. It put me in a very relaxed mood. I've already recommended this CD to all of my friends. Melody Gardot is amazing. Better than Norah Jones! I wish I could see her live!

    more from this reviewer

This is good for background music.

I saw a story about Melody Gardot on "CBS Sunday Morning" earlier this year and was struck by her voice, and of course her story. When I received this CD, I immediately popped in to give it a listen...... Although very good, a little along the lines of Norah Jones......no guts to it.
This is good for background music.

    An amazing voice...

I love Melody Gardot and her singing. I have loved her voice and talent since I was walking around Barnes and Noble one day the song that I later learned was "Quiet Fire" was playing. A couple songs after it was done, I frantically realized I might never hear it again. The worker wasn't sure what had been playing. Eventually, we tracked it down and I was then a convert. I loved that album so much I was thrilled to hear she had another released.
Though I can't say I liked this album as well as Quiet Fire, I won't say not to get it. There are a few tracks well worth having on hand to listen to. And because of her talent, I refuse to write Ms. Gardot off. She's unquestionably amazing and deserves to have everything she writes and creates heard at least once. And then, usually many more times besides.
Still, I look forward to the next album.

Melody's cd is amazing. Beautiful voice, and wonderful arrangements. Worth getting the CD even if just for Over the Rainbow. Am ready to see her live!

Melody Gardot - Glad she is recording again

It is a pleasure to listen to her CD. All tracks are good. It is a pleasure to have her recording again and that she has survived her accident. I can play this during the day and when going to bed at night. Haven't tired of it yet. I was first introduced to Melody Gardot's Worrisome Heart while browsing Barnes and Noble and picked it up for $6.99. Never regretted it and it started me on the path to being a devoted fan. All I can say is enjoy and enjoy again.
