Overview

When Tania Katan was 21 years old she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. She survived, minus a breast. Exactly 10 years later it happened again. By age 31 Katan was a two-time breast cancer survivor with the scars to prove it and a sense of humor forged by the unthinkable. Her memoir, loaded with rage and blistering humor, tells the tale of living through two bouts with death and is woven through with stories of picking up women while bald, coping with her supportive but neurotic family, running in two 10K races, and pledging to never ever date a psychotic woman again. An unforgettable account of survival.

Tania Katan’s plays have been seen at Connecticut Repertory Theatre, Circle Repertory Theatre, Theatre Rhinoceros, Pacific Residence Theatre, A Traveling Jewish Theatre, and Theatre of NOTE.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Playwright and author Katan is a celebrity at her breast clinic because at age 30 she is undergoing her second bout with breast cancer. This candid memoir moves back and forth between right breast (1992) and left breast (2002) and reveals Katan's life as a young Jewish lesbian. And quite a life it is. This raw, raunchy, reflective, and riotously funny book is a must for gay/lesbian collections. Any woman who has been diagnosed will recognize Katan as the "real deal." Highly recommended for public and academic libraries. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Katan takes a serious subject (two breast cancer diagnoses) and makes it funny, hopeful, and positive. This is more of a coming-of-age story than a cancer story - it's just that Katan's coming-of-age involved cancer. This book is light and fun, but with a lot of depth - I loved it!
