This informative book tells the real story of a girl who wants a dog. On her 12th birthday, her parents give her a gift certificate for a puppy. And that's when the hard work starts. Together with her family, the girl researches different breeds of dogs to determine those that have the best temperament for a family. She faces initial disappointment at learning that her chosen breed--a Weimaraner--costs far more than her parents meant to spend. After new research efforts, she chooses a Labrador retriever and then finds a breeder whose puppy she can afford. More phone calls and other research teach the girl what kind of food, equipment, and health care puppies and dogs need, and what kind of training is required. At last, the puppy is ready to go to its new home. Readers share the girl's excitement as she and her new friend explore the puppy's new home and learn about each other, and experience the girl's difficult first few weeks as the puppy has a hard time at night. This book is a must-read for anyone contemplating adding a puppy to the family. It's also a great lesson in family decision-making and shared responsibility. The book is part of the Lerner's "All About Pets" series. 2000, Lerner Publications Co, Ages 8 to 12, $22.60. Reviewer: Julie Steinberg

This book is a pretty good book for potential dog owners, especially for younger kids. It shows the hard work needed...and from a child's point of view.
