Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
David has a pet hamster named Lightening. Since his mother "kind of hated" living with a hamster in her house, Lightening lives in David's fourth grade classroom during the school year. In this book, David recounts the day-to-day antics of Lightening. Lots of color photos and a lively text follow him as he teaches Lightening how to do tricks, captures an escaped hamster, and talks about what equipment and entertainment is needed to care for his hamster. In each chapter, the author has written information panels that supplement the text. These include, "Types of Hamsters", "Gerbil Health", "Fun Facts about Gerbils", "Fun Facts about Hamsters", a section on the dangers to the tiny creatures and another on what to feed them. A glossary, resources, and a list of further reading complete the book. This book is part of Lerner's "All About Pets Series."
School Library Journal
Gr 2-4These series entries present information on the selection and care of pets through first-person narratives. In Cats, a nine-year-old girl adopts two kittens from a shelter. Text and color photographs follow their development from adoption to adulthood. In Hamster & Gerbils, a fourth-grade boy tells of his experiences with his hamster both at home and in his classroom where it resides during the school year. Real-life situations occur in both titles, such as not all family members wanting a pet, classroom concerns when the hamster escapes, and the expression of feelings regarding the everyday routines and responsibilities of pet care. Both books are written in conversational language. Fact pages reinforce the information found within the texts, and both are well documented. A resource section includes names and addresses of such associations as the Human Society, an up-to-date list for further reading, and a thorough index. These titles do not replace such quality pet care books as the "ASPCA Pet Care Guides for Kids" series (DK). However, pet owners should enjoy relating to these youngsters.Diane Nunn, Richard E.
