Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Meagan Albright
This rhyming story tells the tale of a young girl and her beloved puppy. The illustrations are good, conveying the sentiments of each verse as well as the obvious fascination and love of the girl for her puppy. With its short verses and rhythmic rhymes, the book would be an excellent choice to read aloud. The size of the book and the size of the text and illustrations within it also make this a good book to share with a crowd. Since the tale is told through short verses that loosely follow a day in the life of the puppy and the girl, the book can easily be condensed for younger readers (skipping a few pages is fine, as long as you keep the rhyme scheme intact). The only problem is an overabundance of commas; these clutter the text and hamper the readability of an otherwise enjoyable book. This book is recommended for purchase for public libraries and school media centers. Reviewer: Meagan Albright
Kirkus Reviews
Rhythmic cadence, easy rhymes and repeated familiar words add up to a joyful, easy-to-read paean to the pleasures of puppy ownership. The beagle puppy and her (or his?) owner spend one rollicking day together. Whether the owner is throwing a ball, rubbing the puppy down from a bath, protecting her pup from a scary Siamese cat or enjoying a walk, this bespectacled heroine is in charge of her canine friend. Very easy language makes this accessible to the earliest reader, and the careful rhythm makes text easy to predict and memorize. "New puppy, young puppy, soft puppy, small. / Grow, puppy, run, puppy, chase, puppy, ball." Sunny gouache-and-pencil illustrations put girl and dog at the center of each spread and the final night-night scene calmly brings this sweet tale to a close. New readers and children who love puppies-and who doesn't?-will sit, stay and read this one. (Picture book. 3-7)
