Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
When eighth grader Jordan Starling hears tales of her friends' summer romances, she feels compelled to invent a boyfriend of her own. A rival questions her honesty, so she produces a photo of cute Ryan Elliot, a faraway family friend that she hardly remembers. All seems forgotten until Ryan actually shows up in Dallas. Due to an acrimonious divorce, Ryan and his mother unexpectedly take refuge in the Starling home. When Ryan enrolls in Jordan's school, the complications arise. Jordan must navigate the hallways continuing the charade, while keeping Ryan in the dark about her lie. When Jordan's nemesis makes a play for Ryan, who has become her friend, the eighth grader comes to an important decision, accepting responsibility for her web of lies and demonstrating a new level of emotional maturity. This undemanding story is full of stock characters and some outdated slang, but reluctant "tween" readers will gobble up this book. Lurlene McDaniel structures a taunt paperback read, with plenty of escalating conflict to keep readers turning the pages. McDaniel even dabbles into some harder issues, such as divorce and the consequences of lying. 2004 (orig. 1988), Darby Creek Publishing, Ages 9 to 14.

    A reviewer

i read this book in about two hours and i was literally pulling my hair out from the start- it was immature and uninteresting and you could tell this was a 13yrd main character. there wasn't enough meat but once i start a book i HAVE to finish it. it was horrible and left me with such disappointment, i had to run and start reading a new book just to forget about it.

Good, but Lurlene has done better

I think that this book was cute for like 12 year olds, but getting like to 15 years old like me and a sophmore i had to say that i like her other books more. they touched me more and related to me in so many ways. But i can't say to many bad things cause this book was cute and just a fun little read, so I'd suggest it to like 12-14 year olds to the max.

    Okay.....but not great

This book waz ok...but really short. I liked it alright but its not one of those you want to read over and over again. I personally thought it would be a better book to read if you were a little younger....say.....like eleven..or something. Go ahead and read it...you may like it and think I'm crazy...you never know...so give it a try...

    more from this reviewer

    Ehh...not a great read

This book was too quick and seemed more like a young preteens read then anything else. I was bored through most of it and it wasn't really the romance type novel I was expecting.

    Cute and Funny

Lurlene McDaniel is one of my favorite authors. I usually read the books that are about somebody having cancer or some other disease so reading this was pretty different. but this was better than I suspected. I am glad I read it. I reccomend this book for girls who are in middle school and starting high school.

    Wonderful

All of Lurlene's books are great. Its like the book is magnetized to your hand and you can't put it down. These books of true life are much better than all those television shows or movies where everyone gets their way. That's not life and these books show how hard it is to live in that life! I hope she never stops writing books because if she does i won't have anything to read!

    wow!

usually, when i see her name on the cover of a book, i walk right past it because her books are always about cancer, or dying. i remember the absolute first time i read one of her books. im not really a teary kind of person, but i cried through practically the whole book. and then, i creied some more because the ending was even more depressing. well, anyway, i thought that this book was one of the best book she;s ever even written, i just wanted to say that.
